White & Gray Industrial Wedding at the Heinz History Center

An industrial wedding at the Heinz History Center is just sooooo Pittsburgh, isn't it? With the grittiness of our history and the landscape, architecture, and stories left behind, a celebration inspired by our past just makes sense here! That's why I'm so excited to share Kirsten and Jon's big day with you! This wedding features a muted white and gray color palette and it infuses industrial-inspired details for a look that is modern, eclectic, and oh-so-Pittsburgh. A mix of light and dark gray linens were accented with greenery runners, white florals,  and Edison bulb “centerpieces” that were handmade by the father of the bride. Metal signs, cement block table numbers, and a seating chart and photo display made from old pallets also brought an upcycled vibe to the day. Even Kirsten looked the part with a chunky silver statement necklace that contrasted beautifully with her sweetheart neck ballgown. Combining modern and chic wedding trends with subtle nods to the city we all love so much, this wedding has me feeling all kinds of things. Get excited for all of the goodness, captured by Rachel Rowland Photography!

About the Couple

I worked with Jon's sister, Ali. At the 2012 office Christmas party, I  thought it would be hilarious to take a tiger from the Christmas tree to keep as a souvenir. Keeping my hands clean, I convinced other coworkers to take the tiger. Ali noticed the debauchery ensuing and asked me if I was single, to which I responded “Obviously, why?” Ali said, “I think you and my brother would get along great!” We met two weeks later and have been inseparable ever since.

Shortly after starting to date, Jon took me to my first Avett Brothers show in Wheeling, WV, and I have loved them ever since. For our third anniversary, we were traveling to Greensboro, NC to see the Avett Brothers play on New Years Eve, as were our friends, the Campbells. Jon contacted Sara to see if she would help with his plan. He wrote me a message in a card, and FedEx-ed it to the Campbells a few weeks prior to the show. Once at the concert, Jon's plan went smoothly. We met up with the Campbells at a pre-concert welcome reception with many other Avett fans and friends. We found a table to sit at, and Sara presented the card to me. I opened the card, realized it was from Jon, and immediately started crying. When I turned to look at Jon, he was on his knee with a huge smile and the ring. There was a lot of ugly crying, laughing, and then clapping when all of the people us around realized what just happened. It was an amazing night.

About the Wedding

I would call our look industrial chic, inspired by the city of Pittsburgh. The color scheme was whites and grays, with hints of pink, silver, and greenery for the tables. Our pallet walls and custom Edison bulb lighting designed by my dad made the decor extra special. The mix of bridesmaid dresses were a touch I really enjoyed. I worked with each of my girls individually to choose a dress that was perfect for them.

Favorite Moment

The first look was awesome.  Jon and I are private people and having that time to ourselves, before the craziness of the day started, was perfect.

I also surprised my mom, Judy, with a mother/daughter dance to her favorite song “Hey Jude” by the Beatles.
