Traveler’s Rest Hotel

Tell us a little bit about your venue.

Full of character and craftsmanship dating back to 1883, Traveler’s Rest Hotel is anything but cookie-cutter! Our guest rooms are thoughtfully appointed, and our bathrooms are modern and well designed. What sets us apart is our commitment to community spirit. Our great room is a welcoming and comfortable space where guests can enjoy a leisurely breakfast, unwind after a busy day, mingle with other guests, or interact with your hotel owners and hosts. Ask Paul or Mary Beth to point out some of the features of the original building or to share some stories from their extensive travels.
A small independent hotel, we strive to provide each guest with personalized service, whether they are here as overnight guests or attending a function. We were recently nominated by Pittsburgh City Paper as a “Best of Pittsburgh” business and are proud to have earned Trip Advisor’s Traveler’s Choice Award (given to the top 10% of listings based on travelers’ ratings).

Wedding parties who purchase our weekend package will have the entire hotel to themselves – a great way to really relax and connect with friends and family during a joyous time!

What makes your space unique?

Our building dates back to 1883. Originally, it was the headquarters for Byers Wrought Iron Pipe – once the world’s largest wrought iron producer and part of Pittsburgh’s 19th-century heavy industry history. The owners, Pittsburgh natives, purchased the building in 2014 and repurposed it into a charming small hotel that offers modern comforts while showcasing its heritage.

Traveler’s Rest is one of the few independently owned and operated hotels in Pittsburgh. The owners, Paul Kletter and Mary Beth Karabinos, are passionate in their dedication to providing a “small batch” experience for each guest. They make a point of personally greeting each guest and draw on their knowledge of the area to provide recommendations for restaurants, entertainment, and fully enjoying the city of Pittsburgh!

What is your ideal client like?

The Traveler’s Rest is ideally suited to two kinds of clients. First is the couple looking for “The Rest”: this couple has the church and the large reception venue already booked. “The Rest” takes the next step: we provide the perfect place for the wedding party/immediate family to stay during the wedding weekend – a convenient “base camp”! The wedding party has the hotel exclusively to themselves. It’s an opportunity to create new memories (and relive old ones!), and relax in our inviting great room or in individual bedrooms. From Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon, they can enjoy the comfort of our cozy hotel with staff on hand, including a spacious suite for makeup/hair/dressing on the big day. We offer the option of a Friday welcome cocktail party as well as a Sunday farewell brunch. Located in the Southside, we are conveniently close to both downtown and the nearby suburbs and offer free on-street parking.

The second ideal client is the couple planning a small, intimate wedding at an affordable price. The wedding party and guests (up to 25 people) can stay at Traveler’s Rest, attend the ceremony, and if desired, have a cocktail reception afterwards in complete privacy with no other guests on site. The couple can greet and enjoy their guests, get ready for the ceremony, tie the knot, unwind afterwards with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and stay overnight in our lovely Byers Suite. No stress, just relaxation and celebration! And our location, while less than a mile from downtown Pittsburgh, provides not just privacy but is removed from bothersome traffic.

Rave Reviews

We got married at South Side Traveler’s Rest, and it was nothing short of magical. The cozy, charming atmosphere made it feel like home, and having our entire family under one roof made the celebration even more special. Paul and Mary Beth went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect - from the beautiful accommodations to the warm hospitality. If you're planning a smaller wedding and want something truly memorable, I can't recommend South Side Traveler’s Rest enough.

This is a unique independent hotel with fantastic and gracious owners. Everything is clean, spotless, well-painted, well-laid out, and very comfortable. The communal area of the hotel serves as the lobby and smells like good coffee, leather furniture, and wood. It's a very comfortable place to relax and take in the morning or the evening. If you are tired of the sterile, corporate hotel scene, this environment is intimate and wonderfully relaxing.

Our family of five loved the Traveler's Rest! This hotel has so much more character and charm than a standard hotel in the suburbs. Our teens described it as a "Wes Anderson movie vibe." Our beds were comfortable, the suite with was perfect for all five of us, and the common area is comfortable with great coffee. We are so happy we had a chance to experience an authentic Pittsburgh neighborhood while in town.
