Tell me a little bit about your business!
We are a husband and wife design team who specialize in stationery geared towards bibliophiles and science and computer lovers. My name is Jessica, and I’m the face and main designer behind theBird+theBeard. I am a Pittsburgh native, graduate of Edinboro University, and a lover of paper and the printed word – the tangible things that feel special amid modern technology. Karl is originally from the outskirts of Cincinnati, a student of linguistics, and a designer of math software. When we got married in 2012, theBird+theBeard was created, beginning with designs from our own library-themed wedding, and expanding to include several lines of greeting cards, personalized letterhead, and more.
What makes your work unique?
Our designs are not your traditional wedding stationery. We like to print on alternative materials such as authentic library cards or shipping tags, and we use vintage paper when appropriate, like lining envelopes with book pages. The customizable designs you’ll find in our online shop favor the literary aesthetic, but anything is on the table for custom work, especially requests for an academic or vintage vibe. If you’re looking for something different, look no further.
What is your ideal client like?
We have two types of clients, both ideal in their own way.
The first client orders customizable designs from our online shop, often a la carte, looking for the perfect piece or two, like escort cards and wedding signage, often as a compliment to their venue. They provide their wedding details, and maybe even request a few modifications to our templates to reflect their personality.
Our second type of client comes to us for a completely customized design. They contact us a year or more before their wedding date, and we work with them on everything from save the dates to day-of stationery and post-wedding thank you notes. There is a true feeling of being included in the celebration when you work with a couple for such an extended period of time. We are creating keepsakes that they will hopefully treasure forever.
How do you work with couples to bring their wedding paper dreams to life?
We want our clients to show us what inspires them. Especially when designing something new, it is important to see what couples gravitate to and what inspires them.
If we are working from an existing design, I like to visualize how our stationery will connect with the other elements of the wedding. Because the invitation is a preview of the wedding day, I want to ensure that the couple is properly reflected in it.
