Tell us a little bit about your business.
I’m a Pittsburgh native with over a decade of experience as an open format DJ, serving not only Pittsburgh but also its neighboring regions. My journey as The Rick began by learning from some of the most talented local DJs during my early years. This foundation has allowed me to successfully DJ at 30 to 40 events per year, with a significant focus on weddings.
What makes your work unique?
My uniqueness lies in the fact that there’s only one me. I’m the furthest thing from perfect but what sets me apart is my consistent approach to every wedding. I don’t view it as work because I’m wholeheartedly engaged in what I love. My utmost commitment is to deliver a service that surpasses my couples’ expectations. I’m genuinely passionate about what I do, and I translate that passion into both the professional and personal experiences my couples receive.
What is your ideal client like?
My ideal client is someone with whom I can establish a genuine connection. I believe in the two-way nature of the interview process. I seek couples who are looking for a DJ they can connect with personally, just as much as I am. Building a strong, personal connection with my clients is of utmost importance to me. I aim for more than just being your wedding DJ; I want to create an experience that goes beyond. I often ask myself a critical question after our initial conversation: “Is this a couple I’d enjoy spending time with?” and I encourage couples to do the same. If the answer is a resounding “Yes,” then I’m the DJ for you.
How do you get to know a couple’s taste in music?
I understand a couple’s musical preferences by engaging in discussions with them and through a comprehensive questionnaire I provide. This questionnaire covers various aspects of their music tastes, taking into account the different settings in which they enjoy music.
How do you motivate guests to get on the dance floor?
Motivating guests to hit the dance floor at weddings can be a unique challenge due to the wide age range and the couple’s specific vibe. I aim to create a diverse musical playlist that encompasses various genres to engage everyone, all while staying true to the couple’s vision. My ultimate objective by the end of the reception is to have everyone so immersed in the celebration that they’re reluctant to leave. Always leave them wanting more.
How would you describe your emcee style?
My emcee style can be best described as “less is more.” I believe in using the microphone sparingly, reserving it for essential tasks like introductions, announcements, and anything specifically asked to do by my couples. When it’s time to hit the dance floor, I prefer to let the music itself take the lead.
