Tell me a little bit about your business!
What started as a hobby is now my full time job! As a teenager, I loved photographing my big, Italian (read: loud) family during Sunday dinners and birthdays. Any time I captured a candid moment felt so rewarding and like I was preserving a piece of my family’s history. After becoming an adult, I attended college for a couple years before realizing that it wasn’t the direction I wanted to pursue. I quit college and decided to give this Rachel Kunzen Photography thing a go. Now, almost seven years later, I have been able to photograph so many wonderful people and preserve that piece of history for them too!
What makes your work unique?
If you couldn’t already tell, I love focusing on candid moments. Those candid moments – when the couple is feeling at ease and showcasing who they really are – are some of the best photos, in my opinion! Overall, I aim to create an environment where my clients feel like they can relax and be who they are, while I am in the background documenting their experience. Most people who look at my work can tell right away that my clients look natural and their expressions are genuine – this is what I aim for!
What is your ideal client like?
My ideal client is someone who is laid back and can go with the flow. They aren’t stressed about every little detail being perfect; instead they are focused on the love they have for their partner and getting to share that with their guests. They know that their wedding day isn’t about “things”, but about the commitment they are making to one another. They care more about making their wedding day true to them than feeling held down by traditions or what is trending on Pinterest. They love to be silly, to adventure, and aren’t afraid of showing a little (or a lot) of PDA in front of the camera!
What is your approach to photography?
I care about what my clients care about, so my first approach is to always be listening and learning about what my clients value. I want them to feel like I am doing my best to serve them through the work I deliver but even before that through guiding them based on my experience, through quick and efficient emails/calls, and by making everything as easy as possible.
During the photographing part, my goal is to make clients feel relaxed and able to show their personalities and love for one another. Instead of posing, I direct couples, which is what helps maintain that natural look while also making sure couples don’t feel totally on their own during a session or wedding! On a wedding day, I spend most of the time in the background, documenting everything as it unfolds naturally. Here and there, I will offer suggestions or ideas to make a photo better, but overall I want to minimize my interruptions so you can experience your day as if I’m not even there. During portrait times, I step forward to provide clear directions so we can tackle things like family or bridal party portraits in an efficient way.
When it comes to editing, my photos have an earthy vibe to them regarding the color and texture. I aim to keep things as true to life as possible while adding a little bit of warmth to really draw out the emotions in the image.
