Tell me a little bit about your business!
May Chester Design is a preeminent Pittsburgh-based florist specializing in weddings, fashion, events, and private clients. My signature look is a loose, garden-style, and natural aesthetic, which is contemporary and high-end. My design often employs abundant, lavish, and large-scale installations, perfectly balancing opulence with elegance. I am inspired by nature’s beauty and always select unique flowers which are fit for the occasion, ranging from rare flowers sourced internationally to seasonal flowers and foliage sourced locally.
I’m originally from Thailand and have loved flowers since an early age, designing Thai-style garlands and doing fruit carving. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to study with some of the leading florists in the world – Arielle Chezar, Tulipina, Putnam & Putnam, Max Gill, and Sinclair & Moore, among others. I’ve developed a unique style which creates garden-style, lush installations packaged to convey elegance and exclusivity. It brings me great satisfaction to use floral design to help my clients have a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
What makes your work unique?
When designing, I seek to capture the wild beauty of nature packaged into romantic, luxurious installations which add color, vibrancy, and joy to any occasion. My aspiration is that the florals create an experience, create a sense of inspiration – everyone in the room should feel a “wow” factor. I do my best to understand each client’s personal style so their special event will be infused with their own personal touch.
What is your ideal client like?
I work with discerning clients who are looking to create a distinctive experience for themselves and their guests, and who appreciate the role that floral design plays in establishing the ambience of the venue and the event. For weddings, my goal is that my clients feel happiness on a deep level, with perfectly-designed flowers that contribute to their joy. Each of my events is highly customized, so we take on a limited number of weddings and other events each year, always seeking to exceed expectations.
How do you work with couples to bring their floral dreams to life?
We start by discussing the event, the color palette, the style, and the type of environment which we would like to create. I draw-up inspiration boards, giving a flavor of what the various arrangements will look like. Then, we discuss the specific number of installations and budget. I suggest that clients work with an event planner or wedding designer. I encourage clients to allow seasonal colors and floral varieties to be incorporated into the design. I believe it is important to listen deeply to understand what clients are looking for.
