Classic, genuine, and vibrant…all words that describe the work of Christina Montemurro Photography & Video. Her approach to weddings is simple – you should look your best, feel like yourself, and enjoy every single second of your special day. What does that mean exactly? It means Christina's clients are comfortable in front of her camera because she has taken the time to get to know them. It means the expressions on your faces aren't forced but are natural and spontaneous. And it means you are free to spend your wedding soaking in every ounce of love around you, knowing that all of the details and special moments are being expertly documented. Christina's versatility is one of her strengths. Whether it's a rustic barn, a hotel ballroom, or a modern museum, she has worked with a variety of styles and in a plethora of settings. One thing remains constant though – the timelessness of her photos. You'll definitely be treasuring them months, years, decades after your wedding day.
Tell me a little bit about your business!
I've been photographing Pittsburgh weddings since 2009. With well over 100 events behind me, I have experience with weddings in a wide variety of venues. Rustic barns, the quirky Hotel Monaco, the sleek, dark Urban Room at the Omni William Penn, the Pittsburgh classic Heinz History Center, the elegant Carnegie Music Hall Foyer, and the gardens at Phipps.
What makes your work unique? Why should brides and grooms hire you?
My approach is genuine, low-key, and focused. I believe brides and grooms should look their best…but still be true to themselves. For most people, that's looking happy and relaxed, not like stylized models. If you’re not ordinarily gazing into the distance with a fierce, sultry expression, your wedding day probably isn’t the best time to start.
For the times of the day that are not specifically happening for photography (family photos, bridal party photos, couple portraits), I aim to stay in the background as much as possible. Many times when couples view their reception photos, they say “I don’t even remember you being there!” I love hearing that because I believe you should spend as much of your wedding day enjoying the company of your new spouse and all the people who have come to celebrate with you.
I’m committed to making sure that we have a good plan for the day. I also prepare for all of your organized photos (family photos, bridal party, couple portraits) so that we use our time as efficiently as possible. You should never be standing around waiting for me.
What is your ideal client like?
I love to work with couples who are planning a meaningful wedding, not just a pretty one. I love all the details, but what I love even more is when couples find ways to make their wedding ceremony personalized and true to the unique connection they share. It's such a privilege to document the emotional moments that truly move your heart. Those are the moments – and the photos – that will be treasured the most as the years pass.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day?
I have a lot of favorites, but I particularly love reception speeches. I'm a firm believer in trying to find words to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you as much as possible. And these moments when the people closest to the couple do this, in front of all of their family and friends, are so rich and meaningful.
How would you describe your photography style?
Timeless and genuine. I believe brides and grooms should look their best…but still be true to themselves. For most people, that's looking happy and relaxed, not like stylized models.
For details, I love using light – whether ambient or my own lights – to create depth and dimension.
What techniques do you use to help clients feel comfortable with you and in front of the camera?
Before a photo session, I share a favorite beverage with the couple and get to know them a little bit. That helps make it clear that I'm genuinely interested in who they are and what their story is. Once that trust and confidence has been established, they're much more comfortable.
What emotions do you think your images evoke?
So many! The thrills that you see on bridesmaids' faces when they see the bride in her dress. The jumble of pride, happiness, and tinge of sadness when a father reaches the end of the aisle with his daughter and shakes hands with her new partner. The smiles and choked-up faces of couples saying their vows. The excitement as the newlywed couple is announced at the end of the ceremony! The laughs and tears that the speeches bring. The hugs at the end of parents' dances. And on and on….
What is your approach to editing?
I like classic, timeless editing. Nothing overly edited, just basic color correction to make images look their best.
What other items do you offer?
Video! Video! Video! I love how many different details photos capture, but a carefully crafted video takes you on an emotional journey. I love telling stories through video.
I also encourage couples to purchase an album. Digital photos are lovely, but they don’t compare to sitting on the couch and looking through a book together.
