Absolutely Gorgeous Fall Wedding at Greystone Fields: Caris & Sean

There isn't anything quite like a fall wedding, amiright?  The season is such a gorgeous one, especially in southwestern PA.  In not too many other places can you experience the colors, sights, smells, and feelings of autumn quite like we get to here.  It's my favorite time of the year.  So when it's the theme of my other favorite thing – weddings – I'm all over it.  Caris and Sean embraced their October wedding date and made the season come to life.  Dramatic jewel tones combined with authentically autumn colors made the palette rich and warm.  A old, abandoned church provided a quaint backdrop for the ceremony, which was decorated with over 200 pumpkins grown on the bride's uncle's farm just for this special occasion.  At the reception at Greystone Fields, guests enjoyed tastes of the season thanks to a cider bar and caramel apples.  Here's what's really going to knock your socks off though…

  • The bridesmaids dresses.  Caris gave her girls a fall shade and let them go to town.  Emerald lace, burnt orange with a deep v, and a floral print that needs to be in my closet STAT…the result was mismatched perfection!
  • Those florals.  Julie James Designs (who is also Caris's sister in law!) worked her magic and came up with a ceremony backdrop that will leave you speechless.  If that isn't enough flower flawless-ness for you, wait until you see those bouquets.  Oak leaves, craspedia, hydrangeas, garden roses, and amaranthus…the color and texture are out of this world!
  • A family affair.  In addition to Caris's aunt and sister in law contributing to the big day, other family members played a big role too.  The bride's aunt made the wedding cake, family friends baked the cookies, cousins made up the bridal party, and her uncle was the videographer.  Sticking to family was important to this couple and I loved seeing everyone come together to make sure their wedding was magical.

Caryn Azure Photography captured every gorgeous detail of this picture perfect affair.  It's no wonder the fall is now the most popular time of the year to get married!  You're going to love this one!

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?

Sean and I met for the first time at a local coffee shop in my hometown after connecting online.  He made me laugh and I knew he was special.

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?

Sean and I were exploring at McConnell's Mill.  Sean etched our initials into a large boulder and we sat reminiscing and laughing in the middle of the woods.  He pulled a ring box out of his bag and asked me to marry him.

Describe the look, theme, style, and colors of the wedding.

I wanted to embrace the fact that it was late October.  I included a cider bar, caramel apples for favors, tons of pumpkins, and a fall color palette for my bridesmaids dresses.  I assigned each girl a fall color and let them pick whichever fit and flare dress they wanted.  I knew that the look would be pulled together with my incredible florist's scheme.  She incorporated all the colors of the dresses in addition to oak leaves, pepper berries, and antique hydrangeas, which were more indicative of the season.

The ceremony took place at a small abandoned church in Renfrew, PA, where I grew up.  My uncle, who runs McElhinny Farm in Evans City, agreed to grow 200 pumpkins in his field to add to the decor.  Julie used them in the arch scene at the church and all around Greystone Fields for the reception.

What inspired your vision?

The time of the year.  Western PA is gorgeous in the fall and I wanted to embrace the colors of the season.

What made your wedding unique?

Family.  My aunt made my cake, my uncle grew my pumpkins, my sister-in-law (my maid of honor) was my florist, my mom's best friend made the cookies for the cookie table, my bridesmaids were my closest cousins, and my uncle was my videographer.  Western PA is well known for sticking to family values and keeping close to your roots.  I share that sentiment, which made the day all the more special.

What was your favorite moment of the day?

Celebrating!  Seeing so many people who are close to me come together to celebrate such a special time in my life meant the world to me.  Friends came from across the country to join us in celebration, dance with us, and wish us well.

What advice would you give to other Burgh Brides planning their big day?

Trust your vendors!  Let them take the reigns and keep in mind that they have your best interest at heart.  They want to perfect your look.  They have done this more times than you and can give you great advice.  They know what it takes to make it the best day it can be.

Any must haves, must dos, or can't live withouts?  Anything you would do differently?

You must have an extra pair of shoes to dance in.  It doesn't matter how comfortable your shoes are, you will be happy to have a different pair of shoes.

Have ample time to get ready.  You will be so much more relaxed if you don't have to rush to get ready.  I cherish the memories I have of us girls taking our time to get ready.

You also need breathable shape wear.  I bought a Squeem from Koda Bridal and it gave me great shape, but I was comfortable in it all day.

Luxurious & Rustic Fall Wedding at Harmony Opera Hall: Emily & Jeff

The groom's classic style and the bride's affinity for the vintage, worn-in vibe were combined flawless in this luxurious but rustic fall wedding.  Emily and Jeff celebrated with 80 of their closest family and friends during a day that was both elegant and personal.  To fuse their styles, the couple mixed metallic details like sequin linens and mercury glass with wooden elements.  A chic and feminine color palette of ivory, gold, and rose gold was combined with hints of burgundy and orange to create warmth, while subtle fall touches – like painted mini pumpkins and a picture perfect ceremony arbor – brought the season to life.  The couple's go-to beer and a dinner of comfort food made everyone feel right at home.  That cozy, close, homemade feeling is just what the bride and groom were going for, so I'd say mission accomplished.  A few things I loved the most?

  • Emily's shoes.  Talk about glamorous!  The gold BHLDN heels featured a bedazzled toe that is straight up sparkle.  I need them in my closet STAT.
  • Instead of traditional bouquets, the bridesmaids carried matching rose gold Kate Spade clutches.  This spin on the status quo is cute and I am certain those clutches will be carried for many seasons to come!
  • An antique car that added character to the entire day.  From Emily and her dad arriving at the ceremony in it to it making an appearance in her and Jeff's portraits, this rented vintage ride was soooo cool.

Kelsey Kradel Photography snapped all of the swoon-worthy pics.  Prepare yourself to be inspired!

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?

In 2010, we met on a popular dating site.  Jeff IM'ed me, “So, are you going to be my girlfriend or what?” After a week or so of chatting online, we finally agreed to meet.  And as the story often goes, the rest is history.  It was truly love at first sight.

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?

On Christmas morning 2014, Jeff called me into the living room to start opening presents.  When I walked in, he was down on one knee under our Christmas tree with the most beautiful diamond ring.  We spent a few hours with this big secret all to ourselves, eating Christmas cookies, and drinking endless mugs of coffee before we told our families.

Describe the wedding.  The look, theme, style, colors, etc.

We wanted everything to look worn-in and comfortable, but elegant.  Jeff has classic taste and I have a bit of a vintage/rustic side to my style.  By dressing the bridal party in classic black apparel and pairing that with warm, ivory linens, shades of gold and rose gold, and hints of burgundy and orange in the flowers, our wedding was warm, comfy, and as elegant as we had hoped.  We were able to mix bottles of Yuengling and pot roast with pan gravy with black tie and gold pumpkins to create an ambiance we could all be comfortable with.

What inspired your vision?

We wanted everything to feel homemade, personal, and close.  We had a guest list of only 80 and incorporated rustic wooden decor items mixed with metallics to achieve a warm, cozy feeling to the entire night.

What made your wedding unique?

We had an amazing vintage car rental that drove me and my dad into the ceremony space.  It made the perfect addition to our photos around Harmony.

What was your favorite moment of the day?

Seeing Jeff at the end of the aisle made the chaos of the day melt away.  It started pouring rain about 5 – 10 minutes before our outdoor ceremony, but everyone made it work.  Once I saw his face, I warmed up and have never felt more sure about anything in my life.

What advice would you give to other Burgh Brides planning their big day?

Stay true to yourself.  If someone tells you they don't like your colors, they want you to choose a different day, or they prefer fish over chicken – just smile, nod, and choose what YOU want to do.  The day goes by too quickly for you to please others.

Also, I highly recommend having a sweetheart table separated a bit from the rest of the room.  Ours was on a stage, and we were able to eat our meals in peace for a few minutes.  It was so nice to look out on all of our guests and soak in a few minutes alone.

Any must haves, must dos, or can't live withouts?  Anything you would you differently?

Must haves: Hire a great glam squad and a day-of coordinator.  I tried so hard not to hire a coordinator, but it was well worth the cost.  She dealt with the issue of rain while I got my makeup done.  The only anxiety I felt was about what I should have been anxious about – getting married to my soulmate!

And yes, it rained on our special day.  But we still got married!  I woke up the morning of my wedding completely at peace and decided to get married in the park as planned, rain or shine.  We rented a tent, and our day-of coordinator handled the rest.  There are some things you just can't plan for, such as the fact that it hadn't rained in Harmony on September 30th in over 10 years!

Also, have you ever tried to do your makeup while you're nervous?  Don't even try to do it on your own for your wedding.  If you can't hire a professional, at least ask a friend to help you.  Eyeliner is so hard when your hands are shaking from nerves!

Romantic & Fancy Wedding at the Twentieth Century Club: Lauren & Ben

Two styles came together beautifully in this romantic yet fancy wedding.  When Lauren married Ben, she wanted something timeless and glamorous.  Mismatched bridesmaids dresses in various styles of grey met floral shades of soft peaches, pinks, and white to give off that swoon-worthy vibe.  Meanwhile, lots of gold accents in the reception decor allowed for the blended look this bride was going for.  Even the striking sage green of the Twentieth Century Club – the location of both the ceremony and reception – fit in with the day's look.  From Lauren's lace V-neck Bridal Beginning wedding dress with cap sleeves and beaded belt to large floral welcome sign set in a gilded gold frame to the wedding cake featuring mixed metallic fondant confetti, this day was sparkly, classic, and downright lovely.  You're going to love these photos from Breanna Elizabeth Photography!

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?

We actually met online using OkCupid!  I decided to try online dating just shy of my twenty-fifth birthday, and almost gave up without meeting Ben.  I signed in to deactivate my account, when I noticed a picture with a warm, caring smile that I couldn't resist among messages that had gone unread.  It was Ben.  I thought to myself “Ok, I'll give it one last shot,” and messaged him back.  Hours later, we began exchanging messages, and soon after we exchanged phone numbers.  After our first date, we were inseparable.

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?

September 18, 2015 started out as a typical Friday and turned into the day that we would never forget.  After purchasing the ring only four days before, Ben received a phone call from the jeweler letting him know the ring was done, beautiful, and ready to be taken home.  So he dropped everything for the rest of the day and planned his proposal.  Fortuitously, it was date night.  We had planned to go to a fantastic restaurant, and round out the evening with drinks at one of our favorite bars in our old neighborhood, Tender.  As we walked out the door, Ben grabbed a coat, despite the warm weather, and little did I know, a beautiful surprise was waiting in the pocket for me.  After dinner we took an Uber to Tender, and the driver asked us if we were married, to which I replied “not yet,” still with no idea what was to come.  The Uber driver told us his wonderful love story, and encouraged us not to wait because once you've found the one you love, why wait.  Ben was sitting in the front seat hiding his grin.  When we arrived at Tender, Ben excused himself to the restroom while I got seats at the bar.  When he returned, he held up his phone and said “It’s been a great night, we should take a picture!”  Angling the phone to take the perfect selfie, Ben placed the ring over my shoulder so I would see it on the screen on his phone.  Once I realized the moment I had been dreaming of was finally happening, Ben got down on one knee in the middle of the bar and asked me to marry him.  Through tears, I shouted a yes, and now here we are!

Describe the look, theme, style, and colors of the wedding.

The look and style I was going for was “romantic glam,” which to me meant lots of lace, softness, and just the right amount of bling.  I chose grey for my bridesmaids and had them pick whatever dress they liked.  It came together beautifully, some having beaded dresses and some having chic and simple dresses.  Ben's crew kept it simple and classy with black suits.  I used lots of gold decor to bring the glam, and my florist did an amazing job making everything look super romantic.  I think the roses and eucalyptus added the perfect amount of femininity and romance to balance the glam.

What inspired the vision?

Once I found our venue, I knew our wedding was going to be a fancy affair!  But, it was truly my dress that inspired my vision.  I fell in love with this gorgeous, lacy, romantic dress, and it just set the tone for everything I wanted for my wedding.  I did a lot of Pinterest-ing, but it can get overwhelming with all of the ideas out there…just let those ideas guide you and trust in your vendors to make your vision come to life.

What made the wedding unique?

Our ceremony made our wedding really unique.  My husband is Jewish, and I was raised Christian, so we combined our traditions in a very special way to reflect both families.  Our ceremony was extremely personal and heartfelt, both in our words to one another but also in our families' involvement.  We are also huge music lovers and made sure to incorporate songs from our own love story in the ceremony.

What was your favorite moment of the day?

I had so many!!  I think my absolute favorite moment was the second the doors opened to the ceremony room and I saw everyone I loved all in one room there to support us in our marriage.  I'm extremely close with my dad, so that was a moment we had been looking forward to for a long time.  I couldn't wait to get to the end of the aisle to Ben though.  It was such a special moment with the two most important men in my life.

What advice would you give to other Burgh Brides planning their big day?

Do your research on your vendors, don't let the little details stress you out, and remember that the love you share with your partner is the most important detail of the whole experience.

Cool AF City Engagement Session: Sara & Tate

This city engagement session is cool AF.  No, seriously.  It doesn't get much more epic than this.  Sara and Tate opted for a hip, urban shoot with Requiem Images prior to their big day.  At sunset, the pair took off for downtown.  Taking in the impeding twilight sky and all of the glistening lights of the city, Sara and Tate traipsed across busy streets, past gritty backdrops, and even hit up the roof of a parking garage.  That's not what makes this session so sick though.  It was the fact that Tate got hungry in the middle of picture-taking and stopped for a pizza.  Smart move, my friend, because Kat, their photographer decided to roll with it.  The couple shared some slices on the corner of Liberty Avenue and looked like two total bad asses while doing it.  Nothing says Pittsburgh girl quite like a gorgeous blond in a sexy ruby red lace dress enjoying pizza while taking her engagement photos.  This right here is couple goals.

From the photographer…

When Sara and Tate came to me for their engagement photos, they were hoping for an amazing city engagement session…and boy, did they get it!  Outfitted in stunning attire, Tate HAD to have pizza right in the middle of the session and we ended up with some of the most fun, personality-filled engagement session ever.

Intimate Blue & Gold Wedding at Bar Marco: Laura & Brandon

Small and intimate, but uniquely styled, this blue & gold wedding is sure to inspire.  After meeting at the office, Laura initiated the first date with Brandon.  Fast forward a few years and they were picking out her engagement ring together and planning a wedding that focused on love, family, and friends.  And that it did, thanks for the gorgeous venue – The Union Hall at Bar Marco.  This tiny space above the trendy Pittsburgh restaurant gives off an industrial, artsy vibe and is perfect for quaint gatherings.  The picturesque floor-to-ceiling windows are a focal point and make for a jaw-dropping ceremony backdrop, which is exactly what happened in Laura and Brandon's case.  Add in a midnight blue color palette, metallic gold accents, and lots of candlelight and you've got a recipe for a noteworthy wedding.  Keep your eyes peeled for:

  • Laura's dress and accessories.  The lace sheath dress with elbow length sleeves from Glitter & Grit was accented with a beaded belt and (my favorite detail) a long beaded “necklace” that highlighted the open back.  Both demure and contemporary!
  • A first look unlike any other.  Embracing that Pittsburgh grit and all sorts of textures and shadows, Laura and Brandon, along with their photographer Steven Dray, took some pre-ceremony pics in a parking garage.  Laura called it a moment she'll “never forget”.
  • A family style diner.  To keep the focus right where they wanted it, the couple opted for a 5-course meal served family style to promote conversation and togetherness.  Just like being at home.

While Laura and Brandon skipped many of the wedding “traditions” and frills, their day certainly didn't lack in beauty.  I'll just be over here being wowed.

So Fresh Films totally knocked this wedding highlight film out of the park too!  I'm not crying, you're crying.

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?

We met over four years ago in a typical way: at the office.  He was working for an outsourced IT vendor who did work for my full-time company.  It didn't take long for us to strike up some conversation that had nothing to do with work.  Before you know it I asked HIM out for our first date, and the rest is history.

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?

We met in a traditional way, but our proposal was a bit more nontraditional.  After almost three years of dating and two years of living together, we had been talking about getting married for a while.  So we decided to go look at rings together right after Thanksgiving 2015, both promising to each other that we were JUST looking and we weren't going to commit to anything.  We ended up leaving the store with my engagement right then and there.  It was the perfect cut I was looking for (asscher) and the ring actually fit me so we didn't need to have it sized.  A couple weeks later, we staged a “proposal” where we went for a ride around town to our most favorite spots, and he ended up asking me to marry him in the courtyard outside Gateway Center downtown.  Even though it wasn't a surprise, it was absolutely perfect!!

Describe the wedding.  The look, theme, style, colors, etc.

Our wedding was perfectly “us”.  Our day was focused on our love and the love we have for our family and friends.  We didn't do a lot of the traditional wedding customs, and there weren't a ton of frills.  The wedding space was a classic look of midnight blue tables with gold accents, and lots of candlelight.  The day focused more on all of us being together than a raving party.

What inspired your vision?

Our end goal was to enjoy an intimate evening with our closest family and friends, and that's what drove our decision to work with Bar Marco.  Their 2nd floor event space (The Union Hall) was a blank slate that allowed for an intimate table arrangement, and their dinner was a 5-course family-style meal which promoted conversation and good times all around.  We wanted the focus to be on great food, great conversation and, of course, love.  I think we achieved that.

What made your wedding unique?

We had the ceremony and reception in the exact same space, since our original plan of having an outdoor wedding at Point State Park fell through due to weather.  But in the end, it was absolutely stunning and I couldn't have imagined not being at Bar Marco for the whole day.  The tables were all set for dinner, with the exception of the head table, which is where we stood during the ceremony.  The table arrangement made for a perfect “aisle” for me to walk down, and the space had huge palladium windows at one end where we stood, which made it spectacular.

What was your favorite moment of the day?

Our “first look” before the ceremony.  I was a huge ball of nerves the morning of the wedding, but once I made the walk to see Brandon for the first time in my wedding gown, all of my nerves melted away and I could just enjoy that sweet moment with him.  It truly was a moment I'll never forget.

What advice would you give to other Burgh Brides planning their big day?

As much as you may try to avoid conflict or drama surrounding your wedding, there inevitably will be some, and that's ok!  There are so many emotions wrapped up with weddings, but it usually has to do with people wanting you to have your best day ever.  So don't fret if and when it happens; just know that at the end of this process, you will still love everyone that helped you with your wedding.  Ultimately you will be married to your favorite person and that's all that matters!

Any must haves, must dos, or can't live withouts?  Anything you would do differently?

We asked a friend of ours to be our Day of Coordinator, and we were so glad that we did!  I would suggest to everyone that they have someone working with them on the actual day since the last thing you want to be doing is worrying about the details.  Our friend, Sarah, made everything flawless and I didn't even once have to worry about something not getting done.  There will be enough to deal with on the big day, and final details shouldn't be part of it.

Adorable Rainy Engagement Session: Danielle & Zach

Rain in the forecast gotcha down?  Don't worry, girl!  This rainy engagement session is proof that an umbrella and a few puddles make the perfect props for an adorable photo shoot.  While their engagement story is straight up out of a fairy tale (full story below), the weather wasn't looking quite so good for their pre-wedding pics with Palermo Photo.  Did they reschedule?  Nah.  They embraced the clouds and precipitation and ended up with a session that was just as sweet and lovely as any sunny one I've seen.  I'm not sure Danielle's smile could get any bigger and the way Zach looks at her is totally sweet.  If the weatherman calls for rain on their October 28th wedding day, I have a feeling they'll roll right along with the punches.

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?

We both worked at Mylan in Morgantown.  Zach was too shy to actually speak to me, even though he had noticed me around for months.  After I moved to Canonsburg, a mutual friend helped to get us talking to each other.  We met at a Pirates game for our first date.

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?

We were at Disney World with my family in July.  We had a date night planned at the California Grill and were seated at a table overlooking Cinderella's castle.  After dinner, a covered plate was placed in front of me as a “special treat from the chef”.  The silver dome was removed, and I saw a a crystal slipper surrounded by flowers and chocolate writing that read “Will you marry me?”.  Zach got on one knee and proposed.  After I said yes, the fireworks over Cinderella's castle started.

Describe the engagement session.

We originally wanted a fall themed shoot to go along with the fall wedding that we are planning.  We were hoping to have the pictures taken at a beautiful park in Peters Township.  Unfortunately, they were calling for rain.  We decided to take our chances with the weather and opted not to reschedule the shoot.  That morning, it was absolutely beautiful out when I went to get my hair and make up done.  When I left the studio, it was pouring rain.  We met with Maria at Mellon Institute instead, as there is cover from the rain there.  We took some pictures undercover and, toward the end, we took some out in the rain.

We have always believed that life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, but instead it's about learning to play in the rain.  That's exactly what we did with our pictures.  We knew that the pictures would be amazing no matter what, so we decided to have fun with them and make the most out of the situation.  We jumped in puddles and danced.  It was a blast, and it made the pictures incredibly unique.

Heartfelt Woodsy Wedding at Fallingwater: Ashley & David

A shared affinity for antique lamps initially brought Ashley and David together.  But it was their mutual eccentricities and love of nature that really sealed the deal for this couple.  After an incredibly sweet proposal at Fallingwater, Ashley and David returned to that very spot to celebrate their lifelong commitment to each other…and it was exactly five years (to the day) after their very first date.  But just wait – this wedding gets even more heartfelt.  Ashley says, “Weddings are events but when you include those that you love and love you in return, they become so much more.  The day becomes a gift.”  Because of that, their day was chock full of heartfelt, familial touches.  All of the florals used in the  ceremony and reception were grown by Ashley's mom, and the bride's dried flower bouquet was arranged by the matron of honor.  The father of the bride cut down a tree in his backyard to use as centerpiece decor.  While there wasn't cake at this wedding, each of the pies were also made by the mothers of the bride and groom.  Ashley herself made the corn hole boards and the stationery.  The focus wasn't so much on DIY as it was on being authentic, and I think they totally nailed it.  A few of my favorites?

  • Ashley's dress.  The off-the-shoulder Daughters of Simone number with lace trim made this wedding's boho vibe come to life.
  • The ceremony location and decor.  Ashley and David knew they had to get married outdoors.  So the forest-y landscape of Fallingwater was picture perfect.  They dressed it up with a floral and fabric covered arbor that was just divine.
  • Yummy favors.  Guests went home with their choice of a variety of homemade jellies, crafted with love by the mother of the bride.

Natalie Mancuso Photography beautifully captured this wedding that was a celebration of love, family, and individuality.  I'm smitten.

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?

David and I were set up by my best friend.  She had known Dave for years, as he was a member of the same car club as her husband.  After a breakup, she said to me, “I've got the perfect guy for you”.  You know, people say these things but it's not very often that it is true.

She arranged for us to meet at an estate sale.  You see, both of us were lifelong collectors of antiques and what some other people call junk.  The meeting was a success and we started out as friends with a shared affinity for old lamps (of all things).  After a few months, I got up the courage to ask Dave out on a date.  We went on a short road trip to an auction of mid-century modern furniture in Medina, OH.  On the two hour drive, I remember that we discussed our childhoods and upbringings.  I was so happy to learn that he also grew up in the country, loved nature, but felt that the city suited him best.  He was happiest that I was a Polish girl.  After the auction, he wanted to take me out to a fancy meal and chose a steakhouse.  It seems that I had forgotten to mention that I was a vegetarian.  He was embarrassed and I was smitten.

After a year of dating, he asked me and my cat to move in.  A year after that, we purchased a home together.  We've been inseparable ever since, supporting each other and going on endless adventures.

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?

Although Dave and I live in and love the city, we love the outdoors and love to camp.  We try to sneak off for the weekend as much as we can and the proposal weekend was one of these times.  We had spent a few days at our usual spot in the Laurel Highlands hiking, cooking, and foraging for wild mushrooms (we are members of the Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club).  After packing up and getting ready to head back home on Sunday afternoon, Dave suggested that we stop by Fallingwater.  We had been there a dozen times before but I figured what the heck.  We walked down the winding path to the overlook and sat on the bench to look at the house.  There we sat surrounded by tourists.  He turned to me and said, “This isn't how it was supposed to be.”  Puzzled, I looked at him and I knew immediately that something was up.  I asked, “What are you talking about?” to which he replied, “I was going to ask you to marry me.”  Shocked, I quickly replied, “Are you proposing to me right now?”  He nodded.  I somehow managed to get out the words, “Well, you're going to have to ask me again!”

Right there, Dave got down on one knee, in front of all of those foreign tourists and asked me to be his wife.  I was in shock and I was over the moon.  Of course, I said “YES!”

He didn't have a ring and explained that he wanted to design one together.  It was the best decision and I couldn't be happier with any part of it.  He gets me and I get him.  We are a team.

Describe the wedding.  The look, theme, style, colors, etc.

We picked The Barn at Fallingwater because we knew that we had to be married outdoors.  We are unconventional eccentrics.  I work as a high school art teacher and David is a mechanical engineer.  Fallingwater wasn't just a beautiful venue; it was symbolic of art and engineering coming together in the most important of places – the woods.  Through this theme, we wanted to incorporate as many personal elements as possible.  It wasn't as much about being DIY as it was being authentic.  My mother grew most all of the flowers in her garden and both moms made the pies (no cake) and the cookies.  My dad cut down a tree in their backyard to make slabs to support centerpieces.  I can go on and on about the details but know that each one of theme is significant and symbolic.  We even chose our wedding date of October 1 because it was the same day as our first date at the auction five years prior.

Our wedding wasn't just about Dave and me getting married.  It was a celebration of us as individuals, of our families, and of life.

What made your wedding unique?

Seriously, the most unique and important part was the fact that Natalie was our photographer.  Dave and I can clam up a little bit in front of some people but she made us feel so relaxed that it was if she wasn't there at all.  We got to be ourselves on the most important day of our lives.

What was your favorite moment of the day?

Possibly my favorite moment of the day was a private one that was actually captured on film.  I was standing at the altar, hand in hand with Dave as the preacher was delivering his sermon.  I was overwhelmed and feeling so anxious.  The day had been so busy and chaotic not to mention that the weather report had been threatening rain.  I stood there and turned my head up at the sky.  It was so blue and the clouds so puffy and white.  I remember breathing in a huge sigh or relief and it was all I needed to be present, to calm down.  After that, I gained my composure and was able to focus on the moment.  It was then that I realized that all of my dreams were finally coming true.

What advice would you give to other Burgh Brides planning their big day?

My day was so special because I sought the help of those around me that I love.  For over a year, I got to have an incredible experience with my mother to plan so many elements of the day.  These are important moments that will only help to surround you and your spouse with love and support.  Weddings are events but when you include those that you love and love you in return, they become so much more.  The day becomes a gift.

Edgy Industrial Wedding Inspired Styled Shoot

Who knew an old abandoned steel mill could be so beautiful?  This edgy, oh-so-Pittsburgh styled shoot is full of inspiration for your industrial wedding.  With a mission of creating something totally unique, Michael Will Photography teamed up with an A-list of local wedding vendors – Poppy Events, Blush Paper Co., All Occasions Party Rental, and Vintage Alley Rentals, to name just a few.  Together, the team aimed to combine the art, culture, and history that make Pittsburgh so rich with contemporary wedding trends.  The result was one full of graffiti, jewel tones, lush florals, metallic details, and romantic candlelight, all in a gritty, rough setting.  Contrast doesn't even begin to describe it, but that's also what makes this styled shoot so incredible.  A beaded wedding gown on an old metal staircase? A bridal belt made completely of orchids and other flowers worn in front of a wall of street art?  Inky watercolor menu cards on crisp white dinner plates?  Crystal mirage chairs on dusty concrete floors?  Wooden tables adorned with sheer beaded linens?  Um, yes please to all of this!  It's unexpected but totally what you want all at the same time. You're going to lose your mind over this one.

From the photographer…

The inspiration for this shoot was really to just create something different.  I like that Pittsburgh was built on steel and has become something different now.  The city is big on art, culture, and tech.  I love the play on making something different, beautiful, and artistic at an old steel mill.

Cozy & Playful Engagement Session: Emily & Aaron

This playful engagement session perfectly captures the flirty and fun nature of Emily and Aaron's relationship.  They acted like two little love birds – crazy infatuated with each other – and happiness simply exuded from the pair.  As they frolicked all over the quintessential Pittsburgh sites – including the North Shore and Heinz Field – Emily and Aaron wanted to show off the city they call home.  They even included their four legged friends in a few shots!  Even as the wind whipped through Emily's hair, this session with Tyler Norman Photography was candid, cool, and cozy.  These two are making it official on New Years Eve, so in honor of their upcoming nuptials, take a few minutes to enjoy their pre-wedding pics!

When and how did you two meet?

We met in college.  One night, as I got ready to head to bed, a mutual friend brought Aaron by to say hey to me and my roommates.  They were just stopping in, but that turned into almost an hour of intimate conversation between Aaron and me.  Meanwhile, I was in my PJ's.

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?

After three and a half years together, Aaron took me from our home in Pittsburgh to the big apple for New Year's Eve.  He obviously couldn't wait, so on our first night in the city, he took me out to a fancy dinner, and for a walk through Rockefeller Center afterwards.

We wandered into St. Patrick's Cathedral, and I wanted to get a picture at the front.  After handing off my phone to a stranger with a friendly face, I turned around to find Aaron down on one knee.  The crown applauded and I cried in excitement.

Describe the engagement session.

Our engagement shoot was really a chance for us to mark their first year here in Pittsburgh.  After college, we moved to Atlanta and struggled to find community.  In 2016, I found a job with the University of Pittsburgh and the city where Aaron was born became our home.

Walking along the North Shore was a playful and fun way to connect to our home, our community, and the Steeler's stadium we visit nearly every Sunday of the season.  Tyler is an incredible photographer, and he managed to capture our unique and playful love affair.  It never felt over-posed or over-styled, and the photos accurately capture the connection between us.

Fancy Organic Chic Wedding at Phipps: Amanda & Chris

While woodsy and a little boho, the organic chic wedding trend can still be fancy.  Just take this feature for example.  Amanda and Chris took one of the hottest looks to hit the wedding world in recent years and they added a healthy dose of glam to create a vibe that was one part natural and one part one heck of a party.  The greenery and gorgeous, seasonal blooms of Phipps, which is a special place for this couple and their chosen reception venue, was the main source of inspiration.  To compliment the orange, yellow, and earth tones of their October day, Amanda stuck with shades of grey and taupe for the bridal party, while the decor added pink and mixed metallics to the palette.  Add in lots of mercury glass, a mirrored seating chart, textured linens, and other sparkly details and you've got yourself a wedding that fuses organic chic with glamour.  A few highlights:

  • Amanda's shoes.  These Jimmy Choos were fit for a QUEEN!  Pearls, rhinestones, and feather straps…hell freaking YES!
  • Those florals.  In addition to the bride's textural, cascading bouquet that was finished with long satin ribbons, Sapphire & Lace Design cooked up a variety of centerpieces that included silver candelabras, a trio of mercury glass, and pretty low arrangements.  Not to mention that sweetheart table swag…keep your eyes peeled for it!
  • A selfie station.  Because what is a wedding without a few selfies?  Amanda and Chris's included cut outs of their cat and their favorite celebrities.  So fun!

Classic but modern, this A+ wedding day was documented beautifully by Jody Mader Photography.  Prepare to be inspired.

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?

I had just moved back from working in NYC and wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do, but knew I wanted to go to grad school.  After nine years in Lake Tahoe, Chris had just moved back to the area and was in the same boat.

We both attended a grad school open house on December 1, 2008 at Pitt's Katz School of Business.  I was sitting in a chair waiting for the open house to start and I kept feeling like someone was staring at me!  Every time I looked over though, no one was there.  After a few times of feeling those “eyes,” I caught him!  Chris looked at me awkwardly and asked where the restroom was.  HAHA great pick up line right?  After that, the program started and I found myself talking to Chris.  We were chatting about grad school, the GMAT test we would have to take, and having both moved back recently.  The rest of the day we stuck together, ate lunch together, and found ourselves laughing a lot.  I was so excited to have made a friend that perhaps I would be in school with.  Fast forward to the end of the day…Chris asked where I parked and walked me to my car.  He said he couldn't remember which garage he was in, and then said we should exchange numbers so we could study together.  HAHA another great pickup line!  Turns out Chris knew exactly where he parked, but needed an excuse for a little more time with me and a reason to get my number.

The next month passed by and we exchanged a few texts and MySpace (yes, you read that correctly) messages and finally a phone call.  Chris asked if I wanted to get sushi and although I wasn't sure if it was a date or just someone who was going to be my friend at school…I said yes!  He picked me up, we went and had sushi and great conversation, and at the end of the night he gave me a really awkward hug!  During the date, he asked me if I would go snow tubing with him the next day, and I said yes again.  Well, we saw each other the next day and I hadn't laughed that hard or had that much fun in a really long time.  It was refreshing to be with someone who was fun, easy going, and such a gentleman.  He asked to see me the next day…and I said yes again…and well, ….every day after that.  He made it easy to fall in love!

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?

My birthday is in June and Chris had been promising to take me to Bedford Springs and horse back riding.  Well, it never happened and I was getting super disappointed.  Come September, to my surprise he finally booked it!  I was waiting in the car, impatient as usual, and he said, “Hey can you come help me get our bags.”  I was thinking “OMG Chris…we are going to be so late for horse back riding…why can't you just get the bags yourself!!!”  When I came in the house, he was on one knee with the most gorgeous pear shaped ring I had EVER seen!  This whole time he had been delaying my “birthday” trip so he could do the proposal at home and then we could immediately celebrate in Bedford Springs.  It was so well thought out!  He had actually tried to tie the ring to my cat's collar and failed miserably, as she tried to eat it HA!  It was perfect…

Describe the wedding.  The look, theme, style, colors, etc.

I wanted our colors to complement the gorgeous orange, yellow, and earthy colors of fall.  I stuck to a neutral pallet of greys and taupes for the bridesmaid dresses and greys for the guys.  I wanted it to feel like fall, but without feeling “holiday-ish”.  We had a gorgeous 74 degree day in late October!  So with the natural lighting and beautiful flowers Phipps had to offer, it felt effortless and hit the mark with what I was looking for.

I accessorized myself and the girls with metallic shoes and jewelry so that although it was a neutral pallet, there was some accents to make everyone stand out.  I wanted modern and eclectic – from my patterned dress to the art deco back of it and the girls in different textures and colors.  The guys wore grey tuxes – simple and sophisticated – with no boutonniere.  Once again, I was going for a modern look and not too traditional.  I wanted to stay away from what I felt like everyone else was doing!

What inspired your vision?

Phipps is a special place to us as a couple, so there was no doubt it would be my venue of choice.  I pulled inspiration from the greenery and fall foliage and flowers there to come up with my taupe and grey neutral pallet.  I added mixed metals everywhere – in the three table dressings, printed table overlays, and candles – to create levels, textures, and an eclectic but modern vibe.  I wanted the flowers to reflect Phipps – wild and natural – nothing too bridal.  The ceremony was on the terrace at sunset, cocktail hour in the tropical forest, and reception in the special events hall.  I wanted elements of interaction, like a party, so I did a bar with our signature cocktail and a S’mores table where guests would go make their own treats.  My ceremony was not traditional; the vows were our own and the Rabbi talked about us as a couple through words we wrote and told to her.  We wanted it to sound like our story, rather than a ceremony.  We kept the terrace and forest open during the reception so the guests could explore.  My inspiration came from us as a couple.  I wanted my guests to be in our favorite place, among our favorite foods and music.  We created a menu of non-wedding foods such as slow braised short ribs with a beer BBQ molasses sauce.  I made sure every detail was reflective of our style and encompassed the essence of who we are, such as our selfie station with our favorite celebs and our cat as “BIG HEADS.”  We wanted to give our guests things to do while celebrating with us.

What made your wedding unique?

I think what made it unique was that nothing was generic.  Every single detail down to the smallest ones were thought out and planned for.  Our attention to detail kept it fun and unique.

What advice would you give to other Burgh Brides planning their big day?

I would tell any bride to make sure they stay true to their style and add elements of them as a couple in every detail.  That was my favorite part… from our signature cocktail (our favorite drink – a moscow mule), our S'mores bar for Chris's love for S'mores, to our bride, groom, and cat wedding cake topper!  Every piece of it was “US”.  My advice would 100% be to create an atmosphere showcasing you as a couple.  Be true to your relationship in your wedding planning.

Any must haves, must dos, or can't live withouts?  Anything you would do differently?

Must haves – a great makeup artist and hair dresser!!!  Every bride wants to feel their prettiest.  With that being said, trials are a MUST DO!  You want to make sure you perfect your look prior to that day so that on your wedding day, it's easy!

We did a very casual southern barbeque for our rehearsal at our home.  I think this is a must do as well.  The times of doing super fancy rehearsals are over.  Everyone felt so comfortable and it took one less stressor away from us, knowing we would be at home.

Things I would do differently – I planned 100% on my own.  Looking back I probably could have delegated more.  However, I really wanted to make it “ours.”
