What To Do If You Don’t Like Your Engagement Ring

by Burgh Brides March 13, 2025

Your engagement ring should make you feel overjoyed – not overwhelmed. It’s a cherished symbol of your love, but what if you don’t love the design? Don’t worry – your Burgh Brides team is here to help in this moment of temporary stress with helpful suggestions to guide you through your next steps if your ring feels like it’s weighing you down.

We had the pleasure of chatting with a few of our favorite Pittsburgh wedding jewelers to get practical advice directly from the experts in engagement rings. With their guidance and our helpful list, you’ll go from engagement ring panic to having a clear plan tailored to your “Oh no, this isn’t quite what I hoped for” moment.

Here’s what to do if you don’t like your engagement ring.

Take a breath.

First, take a moment. Sometimes, an emotional reaction can feel overwhelming at first, but fade with time. You might be experiencing an initial shock because the ring, your expectations, and reality don’t quite align. Give yourself space to process before making any decisions.

Figure out what you don’t love.

Is it the shape, the fit, or how it feels on your hand? Some aspects of your ring can be modified without replacing it entirely. Consider whether it’s a family heirloom, a custom design, or something your partner picked out themselves – each of these factors might influence how you approach any changes.

Check if your ring fits properly.

The way a ring fits can significantly affect its appearance. If your ring feels off, it could simply be a sizing issue. Take a look at our ring size guide to see if a small adjustment could make all the difference.

Talk to your partner.

Like everything in wedding planning, communication is key. If, after some time, you still feel strongly about making a change, it’s important to have an open conversation with your partner. It might feel awkward at first, and they may have emotions about the design or the financial aspect, but honesty will help you move forward together.

Approach the conversation with kindness and appreciation. You might say something like, “I love that you put so much thought into the ring, and it means so much to me. But I was wondering if we could explore a style that feels more like ‘me’ together.”

Return to the jeweler.

If your ring was custom-designed and something doesn’t feel right, head back to the jeweler who created it. Many jewelers are happy to help you find a solution, whether that means resizing, modifying a detail, or exploring other options that work best for you and your partner. Cassidy from Henne Jewelers reminds us that they can offer custom adjustments to the ring, such as possibly changing the setting. A minor tweak such as this might be all that is needed for your ring to better fit your personal style.

Consider a ring redesign.

A ring redesign typically takes about four to five weeks once the final design is approved, so you may want to wear your current ring for now and plan a redesign later if your feelings remain the same.

“Our clients are included in every step of the buying experience. We are accommodating and aim to build long-term relationships with them. Any redesign down the road should be a fun process – it’s important that you want to wear and show off your ring every day, so we’re always excited to be a part of making that happen!” Madison from Orr’s Jewelers explained.

Ask about exchange policies.

Each jeweler has different policies, but some offer upgrade programs that can be a great resource for brides who have mixed feelings about their ring or want to change it years down the road. Some shops, including Henne Jewelers, offer diamond trade-in, allowing you to apply the cost of your current stone toward a new one. It’s a great way to keep your ring growing and evolving over the years.

Make a vintage ring new again.

If a beloved family heirloom isn’t quite your style, don’t worry – you can still honor its sentimental value while making it your own. “We can always repurpose your stone to create a ring that you’re excited to wear every day. You can pick from hundreds of designer mountings, or we can design a new ring from a picture or your own ideas,” Madison explains.

Pause now; modify later.

Maybe you were hoping for a larger stone, a different band, or another metal color, but now isn’t the right time financially or logistically to make a change. That’s okay! Embrace your ring and the joy of your engagement season, and consider planning a ring upgrade as a special anniversary gift down the road. You may even come to love your original ring in the meantime!
