When it comes to planning the perfect proposal, there tends to be a lot of pressure! To help alleviate any intimidation that comes with popping the question, we’ve created a list of tips for a smooth marriage proposal. Consider this check list a ticket to an unforgettable “Will you marry me?” moment!
Talk to the parents.
If your partner has mentioned the importance of asking for their parents’ blessing, you should probably follow through with their request. If not, even just telling their parents or loved ones about your plans to proposal and wanting them to be involved goes a long way.
Buy the ring.
Make sure you have an idea of what cut and style your partner likes. They will be wearing this forever after all. Once you’ve scoured their Pinterest boards, talked to their besties, or even had a conversation with them and you know what design they like, don’t just go anywhere. Research reputable places (ahem… like the best jewelers in Pittsburgh!), brush up on the 4 C’s, and try to get an idea of what ring size your partner is. Most rings can be resized later but it is an additional expense.
Select a meaningful location.
This can be the place you met, the spot where you shared your first date or first kiss, a destination you’ve dreamed of going together, or somewhere simple like the comfort of your own home. It’s all in how you picture setting the scene, but the more personal, the better.
Surprise your partner with a crowd (if you think they’ll like it).
Depending on your location, all eyes will be on you. Some people don’t mind a crowd of strangers or even the surprise of loved ones popping out, but others may prefer to keep the moment intimate. Get a feel for what your partner would appreciate beforehand, then plan accordingly.
Prepare a heartfelt speech.
While we definitely don’t recommend reading a full speech from paper, jotting some notes down will help you organize your thoughts and allow for a great execution. And even if the time comes and you forget some of the stuff you wanted to say (hello nerves!), it’s totally okay to wing it and just speak from the heart.
Enlist professional help.
If your proposal requires logistics or design work, it’s probably best to hire some help. Professional planners will make your life a heck of lot easier. They’ll take care of all the details so you can focus on popping the big question.
Hire a photographer.
Trust us when we say you’ll want to remember this moment forever. And a lot of times there are so many exciting emotions in such a short span of time that it’s impossible to recall the reactions you shared. With a photographer on the scene, you can look back and see exactly how it all played out.
Put together a diversion.
This is to ensure the ultimate surprise and steer them away from any possible speculation. If you’re not sure of a good way to go about this, we recommend revisiting our previous tip and enlisting professional help from a planner.
Plan a post-proposal celebration.
Invite friends and family to share the exciting news or enjoy an intimate dinner at your favorite restaurant with just the two of you. Either option is the perfect way to celebrate your love and your new chapter together.
Go with the flow.
There’s a good chance that something can and will go awry on your proposal day. Perhaps the weather takes a turn, dinner is running late and you’re going to miss the sunset, or maybe you have to postpone getting down on one knee because of life events. Whatever the case may be, try to relax and be flexible and remember it will happen exactly as it’s meant to!
