Modern Menswear Wedding Style Tips from the Experts at Surmesur

by Burgh Brides September 25, 2025

Relaxed tailoring is having a major moment in menswear, especially when it comes to wedding-day style. Think vintage-inspired silhouettes with wide lapels, high-waisted trousers, and bold accessories that make a statement. Whether you’re a traditionalist at heart or planning to rock a suit alongside your partner, there’s plenty of room to express your style – and we’re here to shine a spotlight on the latest menswear trends.

We spoke with Danielle, manager and menswear expert at Surmesur, to break down the essentials: from the difference between a suit and a tuxedo to whether you should rent or buy, plus what to expect from the custom experience, and of course, the most current wedding style trends.

Surmesur is known for made-to-measure pieces, offering everything from timeless black-tie tuxedos to vibrant, textural, and fully customized looks. Founded in Canada, the brand has just one U.S. location, and lucky for us, it’s right here in Pittsburgh.

Danielle explains that the search for the perfect wedding-day look is deeply personalized. You’ll work one-on-one with a stylist to choose fabrics, patterns, and textures, and be professionally measured for a flawless fit. Her biggest piece of advice? Don’t be afraid to have fun with your look and make it entirely your own.

What are the latest trends in menswear?

The biggest trend we’ve seen lately is relaxed and oversized fits. In the past, slim and tapered legs with a bit of ankle showing were the go-to. Now, more clients are asking for wider-leg styles and looser jackets. With custom looks, we can achieve any fit a client prefers, and we’re here to guide each one toward the option that best suits their needs.

What is the difference between a custom look and a rental?

We can always tell when a suit is custom versus rented – it’s all in the fit. During the custom process, we take upwards of 20 measurements to ensure a perfect fit. Unfortunately, rentals don’t offer that level of precision, simply because every person is different and one size doesn’t fit all.

While fit is usually the biggest difference, custom pieces also offer far more options. You can choose everything from the fabric type and lining to contrasting thread and even the buttons.

Rentals are a great choice for grooms or groomsmen who don’t need a suit or tuxedo beyond the wedding day. But one of the biggest benefits of going custom? You’ll have a piece you love and can wear forever.

What are the key differences between a suit and a tuxedo?

The difference between a suit and a tuxedo surprises most people because it’s not that major! Tuxedos feature satin on the lapel, pocket edges, and traditionally a stripe down the side of the trousers, while suits don’t have any satin detailing. That’s it! Those simple touches are what elevate a look from semi-formal to formal or black tie.

What are simple or inexpensive ways to elevate a menswear look?

One major trend we’ve seen is textured or patterned fabrics. You can find options like this in any price range, and it’s a great way to elevate your look without going over budget. Every suit purchased at Surmesur includes full customization, so details like fun buttons or contrasting thread color are already built into the price, adding a unique touch without any extra cost.

Any suit or tuxedo tips for summertime or warmer climates?

Looking for lightweight fabrics is key for warmer weather. Wool comes in a variety of weights, and choosing something under 260 grams will help ensure a cooler, more breathable feel. There are also great alternatives like linen and bamboo that can be used to create beautiful pieces with a much lighter weight.

What current menswear accessories are you loving right now? Any favorite celebs for menswear styling inspiration?

Personally, I’m loving big “butterfly” bow ties right now! I think they add an extra layer of elegance to any formal attire.

My celebrity menswear crush at the moment has to be Colman Domingo – he’s always rocking wild suits fit for the red carpet. While we might not see many of his looks on the streets of Pittsburgh, he’s a great reminder that menswear does not have to be boring or basic. I also have to give a shoutout to A$AP Rocky… the true Fashion Killa!

Any advice or tips for a couple both planning to wear suits or tuxedos?

I prefer complementing looks. Similar color palettes and vibes allow each individual to express themselves while following a cohesive theme. For example, if you’re incorporating jewel tones into the wedding, each person can wear a different jewel-toned jacket.

Anything else you’d like to share or highlight about menswear?

The shopping process should be fun! It’s your big day too, so you deserve a similar experience to dress shopping. Bring your entourage, have some drinks, and enjoy it. One thing I always tell clients to expect is to feel overwhelmed, but in the best way possible. At Surmesur, we have over 10,000 fabrics, so we’re bound to find the perfect wedding look for you. That amount of choice can feel overwhelming, but that’s exactly why we’re here. You’ll work one-on-one with one of our stylists to make sure every detail of your garment is just right.

As for measurements, the process is pretty in-depth. You’ll try on garments and make adjustments to achieve the best fit possible. Even with all of that, I always tell clients there’s about a 99% chance of needing at least one round of alterations. It’s normal to want to tweak something once the final piece arrives – whether pant length with your new wedding shoes or changes due to weight fluctuation. The good news? All alterations are included in the initial cost!

About Surmesur

Surmesur was started by two brothers, Vince and Frank, in Quebec City, Canada. Like many great companies, it all began in their parents’ garage 15 years ago. Today, Surmesur has eight stores across Canada and one (for now!) in the United States. And we’re lucky enough here in Pittsburgh to be the one U.S. city with our very own Surmesur location.

Surmesur creates custom looks for all people. Their team of expert stylists thrive on creating custom clothing designed to reflect their clients’ aspirations and lifestyle.
