6 Father/Daughter Dance Ideas

by Burgh Brides June 8, 2016

Still looking for some father/daughter dance ideas? We got you covered. After our our list of mother/son dance ideas, there’s no way we would forget about you. The father/daughter dance is one of our favorite moments at a wedding. There usually isn’t a dry eye in the house as the bride spends a few precious minutes on the dance floor with the first man in her life. Whether it’s slow and sweet or upbeat and non-traditional, choose a song that is meaningful or has lyrics you two can relate to. Need a little inspiration when it comes to selecting one for you and your dad? Enjoy some of our favorites!

“Your Song” by Matt Johnson

We really like this acoustic version of the Elton John classic. It’s soft, slow, and it will have you all teary-eyed. Of course, the lyrics of the chorus are the best.

“And you can tell everybody this is your song.
It may be quite simple but now that it’s done,
I hope you don’t mind,
I hope you don’t mind,
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you’re in the world.”

“My Girl” by The Temptations

Go for something classic and a little upbeat and everyone will be singing along. Plus, this one is bound to rustle of memories of you being a little girl. Most tear-jerking lyrics? The most famous ones, of course.

“I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day.
When it’s cold outside I’ve got the month of May.
I guess you’d say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin’ ’bout my girl (my girl).”

“Daughters” by John Mayer

This is a seemingly obvious choice but you actually don’t hear it that often. It’s perfect for those who want to keep things a bit contemporary, but still sentimental enough that it doesn’t miss the mark. Choruses reign supreme so far and the last one of this song is the best.

“On behalf of every man
Looking out for every girl
You are the god and the weight of her world.
So fathers, be good to your daughters.
Daughters will love like you do.
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers.
So mothers, be good to your daughters too.”

“You Are My Sunshine” by Johnny Cash

Although this song is slow to start, it’s really quite pretty. Cash’s signature voice puts a new twist on the old favorite. This is actually the first time we’ve read the lyrics beyond the chorus and they’re kind of perfect for a father/daughter dance.

“You told me once dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between.
But now you’ve left me and you love another
And you have shattered all my dreams.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are grey.
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.”

“There Goes My Life” by Kenny Chesney

This song ends in a completely different place from where it started, but that’s what makes it so special. We aren’t going to include a snippet of the lyrics because you need to read all of them to really appreciate the song.

“I Loved Her First” by Heartland

This one is super popular, but for good reason. It’s as if it was written specifically for the father/daughter dance. You’ll likely be bawling like babies during the entire song, but our favorite part is:

“How could that beautiful women with you
Be the same freckle face kid that I knew?
The one that I read all those fairy tales to
And tucked into bed all those nights.
And I knew the first time I saw you with her
It was only a matter of time.
But I loved her first and I held her first.
And a place in my heart will always be hers.
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep.
And I prayed that she’d find you someday.
But its still hard to give her away
I loved her first.”

I’m really not sure how I will make it through this dance without ugly crying. I’m going to be such a mess. I cry now just thinking about it!
