Your wedding gown or suit isn’t just something you wore – it’s part of your love story, stitched with once-in-a-lifetime memories. Whether you’re preserving it for sentimental reasons, hoping to pass it down, or simply want to keep it looking pristine post-wedding, understanding the difference between wedding dress cleaning and full preservation is essential.

We’ve partnered with Heather, owner of Owl Cleaners – Pittsburgh’s oldest family-owned dry cleaner with nearly 70 years of trusted expertise – to answer your most frequently asked questions about wedding garment care. Questions to Ask When Researching the Right Cleaner/Preservationist:

  • Does this business clean gowns on-site, or do they subcontract the work to other local or non-local businesses?
  • Is gown cleaning their main specialization, or is it a side service that they outsource locally or elsewhere?
  • How long have they been in business?
  • Is their gown cleaner professionally certified in bridal cleaning?
  • Do they use archival, acid-free, neutral materials for preservation?

Wedding Dress & Suit Cleaning Checklist

  • Inspect your gown and veil for stains, hemline dirt, and any damage like loose beading, rips, or tears. Be sure to check all pieces of the suit or tuxedo, including the tie, for stains, undone hems, or missing buttons.
  • Make sure your item is hung on a sturdy hanger. Veils should be neatly hung or folded, placed on a separate sturdy hanger, and individually bagged in plastic to prevent contact with the dress.
  • Place your items in a secure bag so they’re ready for safe transport to your appointment or drop-off location.
  • Remove any specialty hangers and store them in your closet as a keepsake. These should not be included in the preservation process, as paints, lacquers, or metals can deteriorate over time and potentially damage the gown.
  • Ask about the timeline for completion at your cleaning/preservation appointment.
  • Check if the cleaner provides photos of your item after cleaning, along with a written report detailing the results.
  • Inquire how your items will be packaged and how they should be stored after cleaning to ensure they remain in good condition for future wear and enjoyment.

When should a garment cleaning service be scheduled?

It’s best to reach out well in advance of your wedding to schedule your bridal gown cleaning and inspection appointment with a reputable bridal cleaner and preservationist.

“I strive to schedule as many personal appointments as possible,” explains Heather. “These appointments allow me to connect with my brides, answer their questions, and help them feel confident about our processes and services.”

Is it ever too late to have a wedding gown or attire cleaned or preserved after it has been worn?

It’s best to have your dress cleaned as soon after the wedding as possible. However, as restoration specialists, we’re experts in gown care and have a 99% success rate in post-wedding restoration.

How is wedding dress preservation different from standard dry cleaning?

An evaluation of your garment enables the professional cleaner to determine the most effective cleaning method, taking into account the fabric, embellishments, beading, and type of stains. Bridal attire requires specialized cleaning techniques and stain removers that are both gentle and highly effective.

As a member of Wedding Gown Specialists and America’s Best Cleaners, we have the experience and expertise to provide a thorough, professional assessment of all bridal items. We take great pride in the fact that our bridal team receives the highest level of ongoing training in the latest bridal cleaning, finishing, and preservation techniques, specifically tailored for wedding garments.

What happens during the wedding dress preservation process?

After the gown and veil have been expertly cleaned and carefully finished with steaming and hand- pressing, a post-cleaning report, including photos of the completed items, is sent to the bride. The gown and veil are then neatly folded using a layering system of acid-free preservation tissue and artfully arranged to highlight their unique beauty and defining details.

My item is torn or stained – does this matter?

Ninety-nine percent of the gowns we inspect show some form of damage or condition issues. We fully treat all stains before cleaning and are skilled at removing extensive hemline soiling and unique stains. Our team of professional seamstresses expertly repairs rips, holes, and tears – and we even collaborate with a local boutique to source specialty buttons, laces, or beading that perfectly match each gown’s details.

“I joke that we truly receive Pittsburgh’s worst-conditioned gowns – gowns that have jumped into the Allegheny River, oceans, lakes, and The Strip District – and we make them look fabulous!” explained Heather, owner of Owl Cleaners.

Can I preserve other items like veils, gloves, or shoes?

We carefully clean veils, gloves, and fabric family heirlooms like handkerchiefs, preserving them alongside the dress to create a beautiful, artful display. However, shoes contain chemical components such as glues and plastics that are incompatible with dress materials, so we do not clean or preserve shoes for this reason.

Can a vintage garment be preserved?

Yes, we are renowned for our vintage cleaning, restoration, and preservation work. We take great pride in restoring vintage gowns. With over 30 years of experience in the industry, I have restored multiple generations of family gowns – many of which are proudly displayed at bridal showers and weddings.

How soon after the wedding should I have my wedding dress or attire preserved?

While you should have your dress cleaned and preserved as soon as possible, we specialize in vintage work, so it’s truly never too late.

How long does the preservation process take?

We aim to complete our work within two months or sooner, taking the necessary time to ensure the highest quality results.

Once I receive my preserved garment, how do I store it?

Gown preservations should be stored in a temperature-controlled environment with heating and air conditioning. The best places are a high shelf in a bedroom closet or under a bedroom bed, provided no pets have access. Never store a preservation in an attic or basement, as attics can become too hot and basements often have excessive humidity.

What else should a couple know about preserving their wedding attire?

Let’s not forget to clean and preserve both spouses’ attire and the mother of the bride’s ensemble. Their special garments deserve the highest level of care and couture packaging to ensure they’re perfect for their next special occasion.
