10 Tips To Make You Feel Comfortable For Your Engagement Photos

by Burgh Brides March 27, 2025

We’re no strangers to sharing stunning engagement sessions from all over the city. Drawing inspiration from our latest engagement shoots, combined with tips from our seasoned Pittsburgh engagement photographers, we’re here to support couples looking for ways to feel more at ease in front of the camera.

You don’t need to be a pro to feel comfortable during your engagement shoot. The key is clear communication with your photographer, having a solid plan (and a backup), and embracing what feels most organic for you and your partner. Everything else should flow naturally from there.

So, whether you’re looking for location ideas, outfit guidance, or ways to relax in front of the lens, these 10 tips will ensure you feel at ease during your session – with photos that look effortless and fun!

1.) Choose an activity you both love.

Couples who engage in shared experiences naturally feel more at ease in front of the camera. From ice skating to nature walks, we’ve featured a variety of engagement shoots on the blog that capture genuine, effortless moments. If you’re unsure where to start, think about what you love doing together for inspiration!

2.) Hire a photographer who aligns with your vision.

Are you looking for someone who can capture that perfect snowy day or golden-hour glow? Find a photographer who matches your style and flexibility. Check out their social media to see if they feature more candid or posed shots, and browse our photographer vendor guide to start your search. If you’re still shopping around, here are some great questions to ask when hiring an engagement photographer.

3.) Bring two outfits.

One outfit can be seasonally appropriate, while the other feels more neutral or aligned with your wedding’s theme or color palette. This adds variety to your final gallery and ensures you feel comfortable no matter the setting. Many couples also use their engagement photos for wedding signage or the trending wedding-day newspaper, so consider outfits that fit your overall aesthetic. Want something more glamorous? Bring a formal look, too!

4.) Choose two locations.

Having both an indoor and outdoor option for photos ensures flexibility for you, no matter the weather or your mood. Different settings provide varied lighting, aesthetics, and fashion possibilities. You may even find yourself favoring one session over the other when you get your final photos back, so why not have options?

5.) Get permission in advance for any locations you visit.

Photographer Christina Montemurro advises, “A photo session is likely to be at least somewhat distracting to others – asking courteously and being respectful is much more likely to result in you being able to go back and use that location again!” Securing permission ahead of time lets you stay focused on your partner and ensures your photographer follows any necessary guidelines, especially for flash photography. You should also be aware that some locations require a photography permit and/or a photography fee, making getting permission in advance all the more important.

6.) Bring your pet.

We can’t recommend this enough. Engagement sessions featuring pets always capture fun, energetic moments. Plus, having your furry friend there gives you something to focus on besides posing, making the experience feel more natural. If you need some help wrangling your furry friends during your photo session, check out our recommended Pittsburgh pet care providers.

7.) Take photos at your favorite date night spot.

Not all engagement sessions have to be outdoors! Some of our favorite photos feature couples cozied up at a bar, playing arcade games, or strolling through an art gallery. Choosing a location that holds meaning for you will make the session feel familiar and help boost your confidence.

8.) Plan for a backup date.

Weather, illness, or even an unexpected bad hair day can throw off your plans. Having a reschedule date in mind keeps things stress-free and ensures your session feels relaxed, not rushed.

9.) Be upfront with your photographer.

Clear communication will help you feel more like yourself in front of the camera. Tell them your preferences – whether it’s temperature concerns, privacy levels, which side you prefer standing on, or if you need occasional breaks. The more they understand, the more comfortable you’ll feel.

10.) Bring anything that makes the experience feel more organic.

Accessories, props, or even a change of shoes can add personality to your photos. Photographer Anne Troxel suggests, “Embrace it! If you’re doing a fun shoot in the snow, grab those cute coffees or cocoa with all the whip and sprinkles.” Little details like this help make the session feel more natural and uniquely you.
