Finding the perfect men’s wedding band may seem like it would be an easy task, but many guys quickly realize the process is much more difficult than they initially thought it would be. That is because wedding bands for men are more nuanced than most people realize. While some differences – like metal types and finishes – are overt, others – such as variations in the edging and width – are more subtle. The buying process can quickly become confusing and overwhelming. Luckily, we’ve teamed up with Orr’s Jewelers and Christian Bauer to make shopping for a men’s wedding ring a little bit easier.

1.) Set a budget.
It seems like every wedding to-do starts out with setting a budget, and shopping for wedding bands is no exception. There are several factors that impact the price, including the type of metal, width, and number and size of the gemstones, if any. On average, a Christian Bauer wedding band costs between $1500-1800. Remember that your wedding band isn’t just for you – it’s an investment for your children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. It will become a family heirloom to be cherished by generations to come.
2.) Plan ahead.
Generally speaking, engaged couples should begin the wedding band buying process around 3-4 months before the wedding. This allows for plenty of time for shopping around and decision making, ordering or custom designing, resizing if necessary, and making final preparations to the ring (like engraving) before the big day.
3.) Consider your lifestyle.
The search for the perfect wedding band really begins with a bit of self-reflection. Do you plan on wearing your ring every day? Depending on what type of activities the ring will be subjected to, you may want to consider a more scratch resistant metal. What is your profession? Some industries present certain job hazards, and rings made of very hard metals may be difficult or impossible to cut off in emergencies. What is your personal style? Are you someone who wants to make a statement with your wedding band, or do you prefer an understated, timeless look? Considering these questions and others like them will help you determine some direction as you start your hunt for the ideal wedding ring.

4.) Know your metals…
One of the first decisions to make is the type of metal, and there are plenty of options from which to choose. From classic choices like yellow or white gold and platinum to modern materials like titanium and carbon fiber, there is something to suit just about every style and budget. Each metal has its own unique qualities worthy of consideration.
Gold is still the most popular choice because of its timelessness, elegance, value, and workability. It is extremely easy to shape, customize, and resize later. Traditional yellow gold has made a comeback in recent years, white gold is well liked for its brightness, and rose gold is a unique option for the fashion-forward person. Christian Bauer is also known for bands that mix metals for an extra unique look!

The hardness, luster, and white color of platinum have caused the precious metal to rise in popularity as well. Platinum weighs more and therefore a platinum ring can feel heavier, but it is a great choice because of how well it holds up against dents and scratches, as well as the unique patina it develops over time. Furthermore, platinum is hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for those with sensitive skin.
Palladium is very similar to platinum in that it is very white and hypoallergenic, however, it is somewhat lighter. If you like the look of platinum but don’t like the heaviness of it, this may be a good option for you. One disadvantage of palladium is that it can be difficult – although not impossible – to resize.

While Christian Bauer works exclusively with traditional metals, alternative materials like carbon fiber and titanium are also available on the market.
Keep in mind that the type of metal will greatly influence the cost of the ring, with platinum and palladium being the most expensive and titanium and carbon fiber being the least.
5.) …and your finishes.
An easily distinguishable feature of various wedding bands is the finish, or the texture of the metal. This can range from a high polish finish that boasts a glimmering, mirrored look to a matte finish with almost no reflection, to a satin finish, which is somewhere in between. A hammered finish gives the ring a dimpled texture, as if every detail was pounded in with a tiny hammer. A brushed finish gives the appearance of having been lightly scratched with a wire. Finally, there is an engraved finish, which can include intricate patterns or designs. The more texture a ring has, the greater its ability to hide scratches or dents from standard wear and tear. But ultimately, your choice in finish should be based on your personal style.

6.) Find a fit.
The “fit” of a wedding band refers to the shape of the inside edge of the ring. A standard fit ring has a flat inside surface and will fit snugly against your finger, whereas a comfort fit ring is slightly rounded, therefore making it a little easier to slide on and off. Because of this variation, you may notice a comfort fit ring “feels” looser or like it fits differently than a standard fit ring of the same exact size.

If you are someone who isn’t accustomed to wearing jewelry and you’re worried about transitioning to wearing a wedding ring every day, a comfort fit is strongly recommended. Unless it conflicts with the style of band you want, a comfort fit is ideal for someone who isn’t used to wearing a ring. Most Christian Bauer rings have a comfort fit but they also offer many with a standard fit if you feel like that is the best option for you.
7.) Select a width…
Most men’s wedding bands range in widths from 3mm to 9mm. Wider rings are usually more expensive as they contain more of the precious metal. We recommend trying on a variety of widths to determine which looks best on your hand and what is most comfortable for you, but ultimately, the right decision is a matter of your personal taste.

8.) …and an edge.
Another characteristic of the wedding band to consider is the edge and there are typically three main types of edges. A straight edge provides a clean, simple look and can still be comfortable if the ring has a comfort fit. A beveled edge has three planes instead of one, giving it extra dimension and a modern look. A dome edge is rounded with a “softer” look that is considered the most comfortable. However, as like a ring’s width, the best edge is really a reflection of your own style. Some rounded bands will also have a milgrain pattern along the edges, which adds additional texture and style.

9.) Add some sparkle…
Diamonds aren’t just for an engagement ring and you may decide that you want a little bling too. Matching wedding band sets were once popular a few decades ago but have since made a comeback. Whether you choose a single stone or several sparklers, one thing is for sure – diamonds never go out of style.
10.) …and maybe some engraving.
The easiest way to make a wedding beautiful is to make it personal, and the same can be said about a wedding ring. Christian Bauer knows this too, which is why they offer free engraving of the inside of their rings. Customize your band with your wedding date, your initials or those of your new spouse, song lyrics, or even a short message to make it even more meaningful and symbolic.
