Kathryn Hyslop Photography

Eclectic but timeless; fun but classic; laid back but creative.  Those words perfectly describe Kathryn Hyslop Photography.  For Katie, a hobby of cityscape photography turned into a love of documenting people and some of their most special moments.  Now, her focus is on capturing the personality of her clients and the joy and happiness of their big day, while also mixing in her own artistry.  And what an artistry it is!  Katie strives to get those “WOW!” images by taking inspiration from the architecture and backgrounds and combining natural light with dramatic lighting, a method that has become her signature style.  This self-proclaimed “nerd at heart” provides a very personalized experience for her clients – meeting them in person, getting to know them, learning about their story, and then retelling it in a unique way.  If you're a relaxed couple who loves coffee, kittens, Harry Potter, and/or Joss Whedon, then she's the photographer for you!

Tell me a little bit about your business!
Hi, I'm Katie!  I am primarily a wedding photographer (going on three years now) and I love my job.  Every weekend I experience a love story, and each one is different and unique.  My role is to tell that story, to capture the memories so my couples can look back and cherish them.

What makes your work unique?  Why should brides and grooms hire you?
I focus on the experience and communicating openly.  Because I meet with my couples in-person multiple times (consultation, the engagement shoot, planning the timeline, etc), by the time we get to the wedding, we know each other pretty well.  It allows me to capture authentic moments and emotions (no fake smiles here!).

I also use a unique mix of natural light and dramatic lighting.  Many photographers do one or the other really well; I like to think I do both!  At each wedding, I plan to sneak away for shots after the sun has gone down; they are always everyone's favorite!

What is your ideal client like?
Fun, relaxed, and ready to enjoy the experience!  Liking coffee, Harry Potter, and kittens would help too.  I'm a big nerd at heart, and I love people who understand where I'm coming from.

P.S. If you know who Joss Whedon is, please let me shoot your wedding.

How much time do you spend working on a wedding?
For real!  I timed myself once just to know how many hours I put into each wedding that I work.  It turns out that for each wedding, I spend 50 hours (or more!) working.  Good thing I love my job!!!

How would you describe your photography style?
Candid, bold, and unique.  I try to use the architecture of the venue, natural light, and creative lighting to make unique images.  I love capturing real emotion and the unplanned moments that make a wedding memorable.

What techniques do you use to help clients feel comfortable with you and in front of the camera?
During the months leading up the wedding, I meet with my clients multiple times.  That face time lets us get to know each other, and be more comfortable working together.  We also do an engagement shoot, so we've already done a “practice run” of the wedding pictures.

I also like to do what I call “action-posing”.  Instead of creating Pinterest poses, I'll have my couples do things like run while holding hands or whispering into each other's ears to create actual laughter, instead of frozen smiles.

What emotions do you think your images evoke?
I like to think I have at least one image per wedding that gets a “Wow!” moment – the one where you have to just stop and take it in.  Not every picture can be like that, but I'm always after that one WOW moment from the day – the showstopper.

I mostly want my images to remind my couples of the happiest day of their lives.

What is your approach to editing?  What is the typical turn-around time for images?
I retouch every image I give to my clients, so my turn-around time is around six weeks (although I try to be sooner).  I always do sneak peeks on social media so that everyone gets to see at least a few!

What other items do you offer?
My studio specializes in printed products, so I'll help you with everything from wall art and album design to ordering holiday gifts for the fam.
