Tell me a little bit about your business!
I leapt into the world of wedding photography back in 2009 as a second shooter, but launched Dawn Derbyshire Photography back in 2013. I had an amazing couple who had a killer vision and put their faith in me and my budding company. They hired me for an engagement session, boudoir session, and their wedding and let me use everything for social media and promoting my business. That wedding was an amazing experience that taught me about ideal clients, how awesome boudoir sessions are, and what about weddings make me excited. It made everything click and showed me it was possible to have a career where I can be excited, passionate, and constantly challenged to create something beautiful and unique.
What makes your work unique? Why should brides and grooms hire you?
I joke with my husband that my clients must think I'm crazy because of how genuinely excited I get about their weddings. I throw myself into every wedding. I smile ear to ear when my clients see each other for the first time on their wedding day, tear up at the tokens people use to remember their loved ones who have passed away, laugh along with the jokes during speeches, and occasionally bust a move on the dance floor when no one is watching. I have clients ask for me to deliver albums in person so we can hang out and I jump at the chance. I try to cultivate fun, authentic relationships with my clients and I feel like it helps me create better images . Last year, I had a really awesome bride tell me something that made me tear up a little and I feel describes a lot of what I bring to the table – she said, “All around, Dawn gave us the feeling that our wedding pictures were as important to her as they were to us.”
What is your ideal client like?
My favorite couples are fun loving, a little bit silly, like to think out of the box, and are ready to put their trust in me to capture something amazing on their wedding day. I obviously love when my clients make great photos a priority but what matters most to me is that they're full of love and joy and excited to have this amazing step in their lives documented!
Can you help your clients with the wedding planning process?
I've got eight years of weddings under my belt and can usually answer most questions you can throw at me. I'm always happy to do a little leg work to help clients find obscure things for their wedding, send them lists of my favorite vendors, or even pop over to their venue to find the best photo spots and give a little input on the best lighting! My years of experience can be a great resource for my clients and I love helping them out and alleviating some stress.
How would you describe your photography style?
I strive to create images that are colorful, emotive, and detailed. I like to combine my fine art background with a little bit of photojournalistic flare to capture not only beautiful portraits that look natural and authentic, but the moments that go unnoticed and the emotions that are abundant throughout your wedding day. I’m a sucker for details, especially cohesive detail shots that help tell the story of the wedding. I love capturing all of the little things that are easily forgotten after the wedding day.
What techniques do you use to help clients feel comfortable with you and in front of the camera?
I try to keep posing natural and constantly communicate with them as I'm shooting. I am an awkward, goofy, clumsy person so I use it to my advantage. I tell silly stories, bad jokes, and just nonstop chit chat. My goal is to make it feel like you're hanging out with a friend who happens to be snapping photos. Engagement sessions really help with making photos on the wedding day more relaxed since we've already created a bond. I often encourage my clients to do something fun for their engagement session that shows a little peek into their relationship together, like in-home sessions, coffee dates, mini golfing, grabbing a beer where they had their first date, etc.
What emotions do you think your images evoke?
Love, joy, and excitement. I LOVE catching a couple's reaction to seeing each other for the first time; the joy and occasional tears make me all emotional. I strive to try to capture the emotions of the day whether they are tears of joy, smiles, or some gut busting laughter. Nothing brings me as much joy as talking to past clients and hearing that when they look at their photos, the rush of emotions they felt comes back and it's like they get to relive their day.
What is your approach to editing? What is the typical turn-around time for images?
I do all of my own editing and use my background in film photography to influence my editing style. I love to make sure my images pop and I like bold colors. I try to avoid editing “trends” since I also want the images to still be beautiful when you're flipping through your album in 10 or 20 years. I post a small preview with my favorite photos the week after the wedding and deliver the final edited images 5 – 6 weeks after the wedding.
What other items do you offer?
I offer boudoir sessions and some seriously gorgeous linen and leather albums. I’m a sucker for wedding albums. After getting married in 2016, one of the first things I did with my photos was to make an album! I also offer print ordering through my online wedding galleries.
