Modern Art Deco Wedding Inspired Styled Shoot from Burgh Brides Vendors

If you're planning an art deco wedding, all of your inspiration dreams are about to come true.

That's because this styled shoot is fit for Jay Gatsby himself.  If Jay Gatsby were a modern gentlemen, that's is.  The vintage vibe of the 1920s and the art deco trend that dominated that era meet modern wedding style and a little bit of edge in this look put together by yours truly, Lindsey Zern Photography, and an exclusive team of Burgh Brides vendors.  Teamwork makes the dream work and this crew made wedding magic happen.  With the sharp contrast of deep ruby red, burgundy, and navy against ivory and gold in mind, the team pieced together a look that was dramatic yet romantic, classic but new.  Cohesive details ran deep, and started with the venue.  A unique history, exposed brick facade, cozy nooks and crannies, and massive showpiece windows made the Union Hall at Bar Marco the perfect backdrop.  Vintage Alley Rentals helped us set the scene with a baroque vintage settee and armchair, while also bringing just a hint of rustic chic with an ornately carved wooden table.  On top was a pop of pink courtesy of Event Source's Antoinette charger plate, which looked fabulous paired with their scallop-edged Duchess dinnerware, brushed gold flatware, and classically shaped Diana glassware.  Metallic gold and burgundy taper candles in Vintage Alley's brass candle sticks added height, while navy blue Nova napkins, also from Event Source, gave the tablescape a dose of dramatic color.  Incorporation of the color palette didn't stop there; Blush Paper Co. wove it into everything from the seating cards to the menu cards to the invitation suite, on which an art deco design brought the intended vibe right to life.  Our table was complete with an assortment of floral arrangements from The Blue Daisy Floral Designs.  Single bud vases, a trio of lush, asymmetrical centerpieces in mercury glass, and one hell of a show-stopping bouquet, complete with peasant feathers and magnolia leaves, will leave even the biggest flower-hater faint of heart.  But that blood will definitely get pumping again when you see the in.cred.ib.le cake and desserts created by Mediterra Bakehouse.  A hand-painted, three-tiered confection, homemade candy apples, and delicate macarons are just a few of the treats adorning our sweets table.  Of course, no styled shoot would be complete without a bride.  While our model Alexa wore her very own wedding dress, her look was completed with dainty and dazzling accessories from Clarissa Boutique – drop earrings, a double bracelet, and a hair piece that looked divine in three different ‘dos whipped up by La Pomponnee Beauty Artisans.  Smoky eyes and a bold lip courtesy of Pure Beauty Makeup Artistry and our modern art deco shoot was complete!

Get your Pin It button ready. You'll want to save more than a few ideas from this shoot to your Dream Wedding board. Then head on over to the Vendor Guide where you can learn more about each member of this talented team (and hire them for your own big day!).

Decadent Purple & Gold Wedding at the Omni: Christine & Ray

Dripping with luxury and oozing with romance, this decadent purple & gold wedding will stop you dead in your tracks.  THIS is my kind of wedding…opulent, decadent, and styled to damn near perfection.  With a color palette of varying shades of purple – from lavender to royal to eggplant – mixed with champagne and gold, Christine and Ray's wedding is in one word – amazing.  It's no surprise really.  When SHE is involved, it's bound to be over the top in an oh-so-good way.  No detail was left unturned and some of my very favorites include:

  • Incredible florals.  Be prepared to pick your jaw up off the floor.  Mocha Rose knocked it out of the park, per usual.  Tall, elevated arrangements interspersed with voluminous floral runners and short but stunning centerpieces were definitely the highlight of the reception.
  • Show stopping seating cards.  After finding their table on the large mirror display seating chart, each guest was surprised with a personal gold acrylic hand-letting of their name.  These two-in-one seating cards/favors from Jenn and Jules are my new favorite thing!
  • Sweet tributes.  Despite all of the gorg details, this wedding wasn't without its nods to family.  Ray's brother is active military and was unable to attend.  However, he prepared a speech to be read to the newlyweds during dinner.  Also, Christine's grandmother passed away shortly before the wedding.  The couple made sure to honor her by opening the dance floor with a special song she had requested.  I sure there wasn't a dry eye in the house during both special moments.

Every last envy-inducing element was captured perfectly by Leeann Marie, Wedding Photographers.  If this wedding doesn't give you all the heart eyes, we may need to rethink our friendship.

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?
We met when Ray came back to help coach his high school baseball team after graduating from law school.  He had just been hired as an assistant prosecutor and I was in my first year as a teacher at Streetsboro High School.  I was also coaching middle school track.  On the first day of baseball practice, I just happened to be in the training room when the baseball coaches came in.  I immediately noticed Ray and went home and called my mom and said, “There is a cute baseball coach.  I have to meet him.”  I found out much later that I had caught Ray’s eye that same day as well.  We were not introduced until that Friday morning at 5:30 a.m. when we came to play basketball with the other coaches and staff members.  I had no idea Ray was going to be there that morning and then panicked.  My first thought was “I look awful, it is 5:30 in the morning, and I am awful at basketball.”  Ira, one of the school guidance counselors, introduced us and that was just the beginning.  The following Friday, after seeing each other in passing in the hallways and making small talk, Ray asked me out for a drink.  When we met that night, it was as if we had known each other forever.  We spent hours talking as if we were best friends.  From that moment on, we have been inseparable.

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?
This brings us to Friday, June 12, 2015.  We had made plans to go camping with friends, or so I thought.  It turned out that Ray had other plans for the weekend.  Earlier in the day, I was given instructions to put on a nice dress and be ready to go by 3:30 p.m.  Ray refused to tell me where we were headed, but once we got on the turnpike and headed towards Youngstown, I started to put the pieces together; we were headed home to Pittsburgh.  Once we arrived, we went for drinks and an appetizer inside the Renaissance Hotel while we waited for our dinner reservation.  After a slight adventure of finding a cab, we set off for a romantic dinner at Monterey Bay atop Mount Washington overlooking the city.  Dinner was amazing, but it was clear through the entire meal that the anticipation of the possible engagement was all I could think about.  After dinner, Ray suggested we take a walk.  I was concerned how we were going to get back to the city, but agreed to go on the walk and worry about the ride later.  We walked out in front of the restaurant, past the area where everyone was taking pictures of the view, and he took me down a path so we could be alone.  Eventually Ray stopped and took me by the hands.  He spoke from the heart, got down on a knee, and asked me to marry him.  I said yes!  Little did I know, Ray had arranged for both of our families to be there to witness this moment, and for a celebration after at the Grand Concourse.  Ray had planned to continue the festivities the following day by getting tickets to the Pirates game for both of our families.  It was truly a perfect weekend of celebration with the people who meant the most to us!

Describe the wedding.  The look, theme, style, colors, etc.
Our wedding style was classic elegance with a modern twist.  My favorite color has always been purple and it was absolutely what I wanted to be the main color of our wedding.  The ballroom at the Omni was a source of inspiration, and it helped me decide to add a touch of gold as our accent color.  We used the wedding colors in everything from the invitations to the flowers, linens, uplighting, and even one of our favors – laser cut gold mirrored name cards.  I really wanted every detail to incorporate our colors and vision.  We wanted our wedding to be elegant and beautiful but more importantly, we wanted it to be about starting our lives together with the people who mean the most to us.  We wanted to spend the night on the dance floor with our friends and family enjoying the best time of our life together.

What inspired your vision?
The Omni’s Grand Ballroom really helped to inspire our vision.  I have always been someone who is much happier in shorts and a t-shirt but when I thought about my wedding day, I wanted to feel like a princess.  The ballroom fit right in with my vision.  I also found my dress pretty easily and without realizing it was the same one that I fell in love with on Pinterest and in a magazine.  I did not realize until after I bought it that all three were the same dress.  My dress had a lot of lace and I loved the elegance of it and wanted to keep that feeling going through our wedding.  It was also really important to us that everyone left the wedding telling us they had had a blast.  We wanted to mix formal with a party and I think we accomplished that as the majority of our guests stayed for the after party.  Alexis Allen of Shayla Hawkins Events really helped us to complete our vision.  She had ideas for all the little details we would have never thought of and really helped to make our wedding something that I will never forget.

What made your wedding unique?
The incorporation of a single theme in all of the little details is what made our wedding unique.  We had a destination wedding in Pittsburgh, even though I grew up there.  The majority (80% or more) of our guests were traveling to celebrate with us.  We wanted our friends and family to make a weekend out of it.  We listed things for them to do around the city on our wedding website and in our welcome box.  We had family that came into town Thursday and about twenty of us went to the Pirates game that night to start the celebration early.  We had a rehearsal dinner Friday, and although we did not invite the entire wedding, we invited our extended family and bridal party.  It was a wonderful way to start our wedding celebration.  On Sunday, we had a brunch for everyone.  It was wonderful to be able to see people we might have missed the night before and to see everyone again before they started their journey home.  Our wedding weekend was everything I could have imagined and more.

We were both missing some people who were very important to us.  Ray’s brother, Dan, is currently deployed with the United States Marine Corps and was supposed to be his best man, but we found a way to incorporate him into our day.  We listed Dan in our program as one of the Best Men and noted why he was not in attendance.  Also, we asked his brother if he would still write a best man speech to be read at the reception.  Dan wrote a beautiful speech and it was as really meaningful to not only Ray and me, but also to our entire family.  My Nana had passed away a few months before the wedding. I wanted to include her in special way as she was an important part of my life.  When Ray and I were in Pittsburgh for Easter, we had asked my Nana if there was a special song she wanted to be played at the ceremony.  Nana kept telling us “P.S. I Love You”.  Since we had a Catholic wedding, this was not an option during the ceremony.  Instead we opened the dance floor by playing it.  The band announced that Nana had requested it and asked that everyone join us on the dance floor to honor her.  It was a very emotional moment for Ray, me, and my entire family, however, I knew at that moment that Nana was with us.

When we first got engaged, we talked about what was important to us when it came to a reception and it was important that there was plenty to eat and drink all night and that the dance floor was packed.  We decided to have the After Glow (after party).  It was one of the best decisions we made when it came to planning.  Around ten o’clock, the party moved back to the Urban Room where we had the cocktail hour earlier.  We switched from the band to a DJ, gave everyone glow sticks, and the party kept going.  We surprised everyone with the photobooth and more food.  The food during the After Glow was what everyone was craving after being on the dance floor all night – mozzarella sticks, pizza, wings, a French fry station, and more.  The best part about this was it gave us a chance to visit with more of our friends and family and to be on the dance floor enjoying the night.  Everyone says the day goes by so quickly and it does, but by having the After Glow, it made the night seem much longer and the day did not seem to go by as fast.  I would definitely recommend some way to keep the party going.

What was your favorite moment of the day?
It is so hard to pick just one.  I would say when my dad walked me down the aisle and I saw Ray for the first time all day.  It was amazing seeing his face and knowing I was about to marry my best friend and soul mate.  My other favorite memory from the day is the last two songs The Bachelor Boys played before the reception ended and the After Glow started – “Shout” and “Sweet Caroline”.  There was not a single guest sitting in their seat for either song, and by the end of “Sweet Caroline” our entire bridal party was in the middle of the dance floor together.  It was an amazing way to end the reception and kick off the After Glow!

Bride to Bride

What advice would you give to other Burgh Brides planning their big day?
Deciding who to hire for your wedding day can be stressful.  There seems to be so many choices and it is hard to decide.  Follow your gut and hire vendors who you feel comfortable with and can trust.  If something goes wrong leading up to or on your wedding day, these people will help make it better.  The week leading up to the wedding, multiple people had commented on how calm and stress-free I seemed.  This was because we had made the decision to go with people we were comfortable with and who knew what they were doing.  They helped us figure out when everything needed to be done so that we could enjoy the week and day of our wedding.

Most importantly, you have to remember that when the wedding day comes, it is important to take it all in with your new husband.  Don’t stress if a detail isn’t right; focus your attention on the wonderful day and the celebration at hand.  The day will be crazy so make sure you spend as much time as you can together.  See if you can steal a few minutes, just the two of you, to enjoy before the pictures, receiving line, or exit starts.  We decided not to do a receiving line but instead to go table to table at the reception together.  We were starting our marriage together as a unit and we were able to visit with our friends and family together.  Spend as much time together on your wedding day as you can.

Any must haves, must dos, or can't live withouts?  Anything you would do differently?
Our must haves were an amazing venue, an awesome band, a great photographer and videographer, and a fabulous wedding planner!  We couldn’t be happier with all of the amazing people who made our wedding day so special!

Our wedding day was perfect for us!  There is not a single thing I would change, and it went off without a hitch.  I actually keep asking Ray if we can do it all over again because it was so much fun and everything we had wanted and more.  I look at our pictures all the time and it brings a smile to my face because the day was more then we could have imagined.

Navy Blue Wedding at Pittsburgh Botanic Garden: Monica & Conrad

Navy blue is one of my favorite colors so it's no wonder that this wedding totally stole my heart.  With a color palette of varying shades of blue – navy, turquoise, teal, and even a grayish blue – punched with peach, blush, and mint, Monica and Conrad's big day was modeled after the bride's love of flowers.  With this theme in mind, no reception space made more sense than the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden.  The beautiful grounds, lush foliage, and blooming florals provided a picture perfect backdrop to the garden-inspired affair.  And oh, boy did Community Flower Shop not disappoint with these arrangements.  Textural and voluminous with intricate detailing and modern touches, the centerpieces were show-stopping.  However, Monica's bouquet will literally make your jaw drop.  A lovely floral motif in the stationery and other paper pieces from Blush Paper Co. helped to bring the look full circle.  Other darling details include:

  • A nod to many family ties and traditions.  Monica and Conrad had their first look in her parent's backyard.  They presented pink carnations – Monica's grandmother's favorite flower – to the Blessed Mother during their Catholic ceremony.  A horse shoe charm attached to Monica's bouquet paid tribute to the one her grandfather gave to her mom on her own wedding day.  All of these small acts proved just how big family is to this bride and groom.
  • The cutest laser cut cake topper.  This wooden number was made by Pittsburgh's own Pennwood Co. and it make the sweetest part of the wedding reception even sweeter.
  • A beautiful acrylic seating chart that will make even the most hard core DIY bride jealous.  With a little help from a Something Turquoise tutorial, Monica made the massive, hand-lettered sign that let everyone know their place for the evening.  Monica, are you taking orders????
  • One heck of a sweetheart table.  I don't want to give away too much but I'll just say this: a floral chandelier is involved.  I'm dying.
  • Dance floor fun thanks to the help of a few hula hoops.  Monica's parents had them at their wedding reception, so she and Conrad incorporated them into their own big day.  Not only were they such a fun addition, but they were also another family connection.  Plus, as Monica put it, “Who doesn't love to hula hoop?”

Devoted to You Events helped to bring all of the elements together and Tyler Norman Photography was on site to make sure it was all documented.  Dainty but dramatic, this wedding brings the prettiest garden to life in all the best ways.

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?
We met our freshman year at Mercyhurst University.  He had a class with my roommate and they were working on a project together.  The next term, we ended up having a class together.  I liked him but was too shy to do anything, so my friends kept getting him to hang out with us.  We quickly ended up becoming best friends and started dating the next year.

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?
The night we got engaged, he took me out to dinner at Six Penn.  We had an amazing meal and after dinner, he suggested we walk down to the park on the corner of 7th and Penn.  I have always loved the magnolia trees there.  It was raining just a little bit.  When we got to the center of the park, he got down on one knee and pulled out the most beautiful ring.

My engagement ring (and our bands) are from L.J. Marks Jewelers.  Conrad had my engagement ring custom made to resemble Celtic knots.  He knows I love Celtic knots because of my Irish heritage and because Celtic knots traditionally have no beginning and no end.  On our wedding day, he gave me a locket with a Celtic knot on it and inside was the penny I had given him the night before.  It was from the year we started dating.

Describe the wedding.  The look, theme, style, colors, etc.
We wanted our wedding to be fun and laid back.  We decided on the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden because a.) I love flowers, b.) It's gorgeous, and c.) It gave us the perfect place to host a beautiful and fun reception.  I guess if we had a theme it would be garden/flowers.  I love flowers more than anything so our decorations were floral and greenery based.  Our favorite color is blue so we chose navy for the girls and grey suits with navy ties for the guys.  We had a traditional Catholic mass and then celebrated at the beautiful Pittsburgh Botanic Garden.  We couldn't have asked for better weather that day and were able to spend a lot of time outside before the wedding and after.

We had a first look before the wedding in my parent's backyard.  It was wonderful to see him before the ceremony.  It was really nice to just spend a quiet few moments together before hand.

During the reception, we snuck off for a little while into the garden with the photographer for some pictures at sunset.  It was fun to walk around and also to just enjoy a few moments together.

What inspired your vision?
Well, I love flowers, and we both love the color blue and being outside.  I love to garden and grew up gardening with my Pap and parents.  We didn't so much have a “theme”; just as long as there were flowers and greens, I was happy!

What made your wedding unique?
I would say that having family traditions as well as adding our own touches made it feel special that day.  We took flowers to the Blessed Mother during Mass, which many couples do.  However, the flowers we took were all pink carnations.  My grandmother on my mom's side passed away in 2013, and pink carnations were her favorite flower.  It was a special reminder that she was there with me.

In my bouquet, I had a picture of both she and my Pap and a horse shoe for good luck.  My Pap gave my mom a horse shoe for her bouquet on her wedding day, so I also carried one in mine.  It was a gift from my godmother.

What was your favorite moment of the day?
It's hard to pick just one!  I loved seeing him for the first time before the wedding – it really calmed my nerves and just made me incredibly happy.  I loved when we went to take pictures at sunset.  I grabbed his hand and we ran off into the field.  At one point when we were heading back down, I just stopped him and we stood there together to just watch the sunset.  Everyone tells you to stop and enjoy the moment, so we did.  At the end of the night, we ended up inside a huge crowded circle of our friends and family as they sang Daft Punk's “One More Time”.  It was incredible, as you could feel all the love and happiness exuding from everyone there.

Bride to Bride

What advice would you give to other Burgh Brides planning their big day?
Enjoy the ride and don't sweat the small stuff.  Wear comfy shoes and make sure you eat something.  At the end of the day, all that matters is that you both end up married.

Any must haves, must dos, or can't live withouts?  Anything you would do differently?
I wouldn't change a thing!  In my eyes, our day was perfect.

Urban Rooftop Engagement Session: Carly & Jared

A freezing, gray, cloudy (typical) Pittsburgh day didn't stop Carly and Jared's rooftop engagement session with Rachel Tokarski Photography from being totally amazing.  This lucky pair has their very own apartment building to thank for this incredible view.  From there, they headed to the Cultural District since these two are self-proclaimed “theater nerds”.  Throw in a few bridge shots for good measure, and you've got yourself a quintessential Pittsburgh engagement session.  The city's infamous outline and downtown's lovable grit may seem harsh for e-photos, but Carly's bright red jacket and the playfulness between her and Jared brighten things right up.  Carly wanted this session to capture exactly where she and Jared are in their lives – in the city and in love.  I'd say mission accomplished.

P.S. Wait until you see Carly's GORGEOUS amethyst engagement ring!

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?
Once upon a time, Jared, a handsome director, was searching high and low for an actress to star in his first production with his newly formed Shakespeare company, Food for Groundlings.  By chance, I, a college student home for summer break and looking for a project to keep me busy, went in for an audition.  As rehearsals went on and we got to know each other, our chemistry was undeniable and romance bloomed.  We fell more in love with each other every day.

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?
One of our favorite things to do together is go to WWE (you got it right, World Wrestling Entertainment) events whenever they are in town.  On November 30, 2015, I was rushing around our apartment scrambling to make a sign denouncing the champion at the time, Sheamus, for his disgusting beard.  While I was working busily, Jared started suggesting different signs I should make.  “What about something more personal?  How about ‘She said yes'?”  I turned around to see Jared on his knee holding the most beautiful amethyst ring I had ever seen.  After a few minutes of “Are you serious!?”, I said yes!  We got to share our excitement with the world at WWE Raw and, who knows, maybe we will get to share our newlywed bliss with the world at Wrestlemania 33…

Tell me about the ring!
The amethyst ring does have a cool backstory!  The first night Jared and I hung out just the two of us, we were having some drinks and trying to get to know each other.  We found we had a lot in common and actually should have run into each other several times in our lives (I was best friends with his cousin growing up, he was in a mutual friend's wedding, and we actually graduated from the same high school five years apart).  He pointed out a ring I was wearing on my right hand and asked me about it.  I told him that I bought it for myself while studying abroad in London and that it was amethyst, my favorite.  He jumped at the word amethyst.  “The Amethyst Queen!”  Obviously I was confused and a little freaked out that he was so excited about my ring.  Apparently, he had written a song a long time ago about his ideal lady that was called “The Amethyst Queen”.   At the time it was a funny coincidence, but once we started seriously dating, it became our thing.  Every piece of jewelry he has gotten for me has had amethyst featured.  It was only right for the engagement ring to be an amethyst too!

Describe the engagement session.
For our engagement shoot, we wanted to capture where we are at this stage of our lives together: in love in the city.  The rooftop of our apartment building has a great view of the Pittsburgh skyline, so we had to take advantage of it!  Then, we just walked to our favorite place, the Cultural District.  We go see shows in the theaters all the time since we are both theater nerds.  The only picture I had in my head was us below the Byham marquee for our Save the Dates.  The rest was Rachel being a brilliant photographer! We had planned on a sunny day, and instead got a freezing muggy day…BUT these pictures couldn't have turned out more perfect!  My bright red jacket (we didn't plan on wearing our jackets at all) with the neutral tones of the city really popped and added to the photos.  By the end of the day, we were all popsicles, but we had a great time laughing and kissing. 🙂

Lavender Shabby Chic Wedding at Destiny Hill Farm: Angela & Donnie

Today's shabby chic wedding is all kinds of pretty!  What started as a potential career connection quickly blossomed into true love.  One picnic proposal and four years later, Angela and Donnie exchanged vows on a hot July day.  The couple let their big day be inspired by their chosen venue, Destiny Hill Farm.  This meant a soft, summery palette of lavender and ivory, loads of cute details like wooden and chalkboard signs, a ribbon garland, and lots of lace and burlap, and even a cocktail hour in the horse stables.  And what Pittsburgh is complete without a massive cookie table?!  And by massive, I mean 3,000 little pieces of heaven!  Donnie's mom even hosted baking parties at her house in preparation.  These are just a few examples of how this wedding day was chock full of heartfelt touches.  Keep your eyes peeled for my other favorites:

  • The embroidered button downs Angela and her ladies wore to get wedding ready.  Personalized with each gal's initials, these shirts were totally adorable.
  • #happilyeverhoward7252015.  Wedding hashtags certainly aren't a new thing but I love how Angela and Donnie put their own unique spin on a popular wedding phrase.  It appeared on everything from the ceremony programs to the cookie table take home bags.
  • Speaking of the ceremony, this one couldn't have taken place in a prettier location.  Under an arbor accented with hanging florals, the bride and groom said “I do” in the lavender fields that Destiny Hill is famous for.  Can you just imagine the heavenly smell?!
  • Quite possibly my favorite thing about Angela and Donnie is that they admittedly planned more for the marriage than they did the wedding.  They recognized that while this day would certainly be a special one, the journey they were about to embark on together was really what mattered the most.

David Burke Photographer captured this uber romantic day.  Congrats Angela and Donnie!  Your wedding was simply darling!

Be sure to take a few minutes to watch Angela and Donnie's highlight video.  I swear I cry every time I watch a wedding film…

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?
May 2011.  A week before I graduated from Penn State, my good friend, Kat, came back to our senior house (aka The Lair) from a club baseball alumni party.  She said she met a teacher from Pittsburgh who was super fun and really cute.  Trusting her judgment and hoping I could get deets about how he landed a teaching job in the Burgh, I agreed to go to dinner at Mad Mex in Shadyside with him.  We soon became inseparable and have enjoyed four anniversary dinners over margs at that same Mad Mex.  🙂

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?
Memorial Day Weekend 2014.  On Saturday morning, Donnie and I were making one of my Pinterest-inspired holiday platters.  As I fiddled over creating the perfect American flag out of fruit and cheese, Donnie reminded me that we needed to get ready so we could enjoy our picnic at The Point, before my dad & Carol's Memorial Day cookout.  This led to him taking over my role in the kitchen and me getting ready (such a champ).

As we strolled hand in hand along the Riverwalk path we had run oh-so-many times before during our half marathon training, we found a spot for our picnic at The Point.  We ate the sandwiches and snacks Donnie had packed.  The next thing I know, Donnie and I were singing along in the sunshine to Lee Brice's “I Don't Dance.”  He started reminiscing our week's events: anniversary dinner at Mad Mex, Pirates game in the same seats we had on one of our first dates, dinner at Primanti's where he asked me to be his girlfriend, and lunch at Mulligan's where he first told me he loved me.  Just as I realized he had really been proposing all week, he was down on one knee.  It was by far the best moment of my life, only to be followed by more happy moments with my sister and Drew, who were hiding nearby with a picnic basket filled with celebratory drinks.  We spent the rest of our weekend celebrating with family and friends!

Describe the wedding.  The look, theme, style, colors, etc.
Our wedding at Destiny Hill Farm had a romantic shabby chic theme.  We got married outside near lavender fields, hosted the cocktail hour in the stables, and had the reception in a show barn.

What inspired your vision?
Playing off of the lavender fields at Destiny Hill Farm, I went with a lavender and ivory color scheme to accent the venue.  I got a lot of my style inspiration from Southern Weddings magazine.

What made your wedding unique?
Donnie and I chose to write our own vows to one another.  Throughout wedding planning, people would ask us, “What are you most looking forward to?” to which we both answered, “Saying our vows.”  We really focused more on planning our marriage than just planning the wedding.  We were fortunate to be married by a good family friend who really helped us through marriage prep sessions.  I was so excited to be getting married to my best friend that the wedding just felt like a bonus.

Another thing that made our wedding unique was our decadent cookie table!  Prior to the big day, my mother-in-law hosted baking parties at her house to make sure we had over 3,000 cookies for guests to enjoy and take home with them.

What was your favorite moment of the day?
My favorite moment of the day was hearing Donnie's vows.  Even though we did not peek at one another's beforehand, they were very similar in promises and hopes for our future.

Bride to Bride

What advice would you give to other Burgh Brides planning their big day?
Never, ever tell a Pittsburgh woman (mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, etc) “No” or “Maybe” to a cookie table at your Pittsburgh wedding.  Not everyone will eat cake, but I promise you that everyone will eat a cookie (or a dozen)!

Don't lose sight of the fact that you are planning a marriage and not just a wedding.

Any must haves, must dos, or can't live withouts?  Anything you would do differently?
At the end of the wedding, all you have are memories…and pictures and a video.  Look for a photographer and videographer that is going to capture your story.

I prayed for no rain for our outdoor ceremony in July, but neglected to pray for no heat!

Glittery White & Silver Wedding at the Willow Room: Corrine & Brandon

Affiliate-Link

Today's feature is exactly why I love winter weddings.  Corrine had never dreamed of getting hitched in the cold months, but she and Brandon somehow ended up with a January 23 wedding date.  And what a gorgeous day it was!  Inspired by the shades of the season, the color palette included silver, pewter, and ivory.  Throw in Corrine's wedding dress with its pearl and bead encrusted shoulders and waistline, lots of metallic details, and all over sequin bridesmaids dresses for the maids of honor, and this glittery affair was sparkly and sophisticated.  Be sure to check out my favorite features:

  • Those portraits!  Lots and lots of snow, but absolutely dreamy and serene!  The bridesmaids were cozy in black and white plaid blanket scarves, while Corrine and Brandon had their love to keep them warm.
  • Stunning bouquets!  The best part about them is that they were created by Corrine's father!  Yep, he's the owner of Barton's Flower & Bake Shop!  He put together irises, silver brunia, roses, and dusty miller to keep with the color scheme and introduce gorgeous texture.
  • A throwback wedding cake!  Corrine's twin sisters are the Bake Shop half of the family business and they whipped up an incredible 5-tiered confection that was inspired by the trends of the 1980s and 90s.  I remember going to weddings as a kid and thinking that the cakes were works of art, so seeing Corrine and Brandon's gave me such a sense of nostalgia.

All of the glitz and glamour was captured by Alison Mish Photography.  I guarantee this wedding will make you reconsider your feelings for Pittsburgh winters.  I for one am loving this time of the year!

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?
We met on New Year's Eve 2011 in New York City through mutual friends.  We are both from the South Hills of Pittsburgh and were traveling to NYC for a New Year's Eve bash in Times Square at a night club.  We were invited by friends and hit it off!

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?
Brandon proposed June 2015 at Il Tetto on a rooftop bar in downtown Pittsburgh.  He wore a New Year's Eve hat and had my ring sitting in a glass of champagne.  He tried to recreate the night we met.

Describe the wedding.  The look, theme, style, colors, etc.
The theme was all things glitter, winter white, and silver.  My father was my florist and my twin sisters were my bakers; my family owns a flower and bake shop.  My five tiered cake featured a nostalgic fountain from back in the 80's and early 90's.  I loved it!  My dad put together the most beautiful winter white bouquets with accents of silver and gray!  The bridesmaids wore gun metal gray and my twin sisters, the maids of honor, wore full length silver sequin gowns.  It was perfect.

What inspired your vision?
I had never dreamed of a winter wedding but if I had, ours would have been it.  Our day was a winter wonderland and the pictures prove it – all things glittery and covered in snow.

Bride to Bride

What advice would you give to other Burgh Brides planning their big day?
Try Barton's Flowers & Bake Shop!  It's a one-stop shop.  I let my dad and sisters run with ideas.  I was so relaxed and at ease.  I just told them a few things of what I envisioned and the pictures show their talents.  My sisters made two huge Pittsburgh cookie tables and a cake that was to die for (toasted coconut cake with cream cheese icing and double dark chocolate with peanut butter buttercream – can you imagine?).  I was the most relaxed bride because of them.  I was so blessed to have such amazing, creative people to make Brandon's and my day that of winter wedding dreams.

Any must haves, must dos, or can't live withouts?  Anything you would do differently?
The day came and went just as God had planned.  Enjoy the day – that would be my suggestion.  It goes quickly, just as everyone had said it would to me.  Brandon and I enjoyed some quiet time together as our guests were in the midst of cocktail hour.  We were able to sit, partake in the first course of our dinner, and discuss how WE WERE MARRIED!  Try to stay in the moment because before you know it, it's over.

Vintage Romance Inspired Wedding at Longue Vue Club: Robin & Justin

Affiliate-Link

There is something about a vintage romance inspired wedding that is just so…well…romantic!  Like total le swooning over here.  That's what today's real wedding feature will have you doing.

After Robin and Justin's friendship blossomed into love, these two high school sweethearts finally tied the knot.  For their wedding day, Robin wanted to recreate all of the love and romance she had always felt in her relationship with Justin.  Upon touring the Longue Vue Club, Robin knew its beautiful architecture and surrounding grounds would fit the vibe perfectly.  But it wasn't until she stumbled upon some pink mercury glass candle holders that the entire look really came together.  The bride worked with florist Julie James Design to use the candle holders instead of traditional centerpiece vases and the rest of the vintage romance theme came to life from there.  Keep your eyes peeled for some of my favorite details!

  • The color scheme.  What is a more romantic color than pink?  Robin chose blush and gold as her wedding hues.  When the softness and femininity of these shades were paired with the venue and the overall ambiance for the day, it was a match made in heaven.
  • Robin's dress.  A bride can never go wrong in Hayley Paige.  The sweetheart neck ballgown with its wide trim edging helped Robin take the term “blushing bride” to a whole new level.
  • Those flowers!  The unique pink mercury glass centerpieces weren't the only beautiful florals at this wedding.  Just wait until you see the elevated arrangements and bouquets!  Pink roses, hydrangeas, astilbe, snap dragons…they were literally dripping in romance.  I bet the smell was divine too!
  • Chalkboard details.  Paying a slight tribute to her profession (an elementary teacher!), Robin got crafty with some chalk art and created the table numbers and signs for the escort card table, cigar bar, and cookie table.  They added a hint of whimsy to the decor.
  • Stunning portraits!  For real.  Just like pink is the go-to color for a romantic wedding day, Eva Lin is the go-to photographer.  Between the golden light, the incredible scenery, and the adorableness that is Robin and Justin, I was positively giddy over these portraits!

This incredible feature is sure to leave your heart all aflutter.  If it doesn't, you might want to check your pulse.  Just saying.

From the bride…

When and how did you two meet?
Justin and I are high school sweethearts!  We met our freshman year and quickly became close friends.  It took us a while to realize that our friendship was something more.  Over the years, we realized how similar we were and how much we enjoyed being around each other.  From the beginning, Justin has always been my best friend.  I was attracted to his hilarious sense of humor and caring personality (and of course, how handsome he is).  Justin and I went to our senior prom together and have been together ever since.

Juicy details on the proposal, please!  Where, when, how?
Our favorite vacation spot is Hilton Head, South Carolina.  Last August, we went on our annual family vacation and I had absolutely no idea that Justin was planning to propose.  Justin is a huge jokester and literally joked all the time about proposing.  I even joked that when he did actually propose, I would never believe that it was real.  After spending the day on the beach with our family, we came back to get ready for dinner.  While sitting by the pool talking with his family, Justin came outside with teary eyes.  I thought something really bad happened!  He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.  At first, I thought it was another one of his jokes, but by the look on his face I knew it was real (and there was a ring!).  We spent the rest of the week celebrating with our family and enjoying the beach.

Describe the wedding.  The look, theme, style, colors, etc.
The one word that comes to mind when describing our wedding is romantic.  I wanted our wedding style to reflect the honest romance that I've always felt from our relationship.  When we first went to Longue Vue Club, I knew it fit the vision that I had for our wedding.  Longue Vue screams vintage romance.  The club has amazing architecture, scenery, and romantic touches.

Although I've never been crazy about the color pink, I felt that blush pink and gold would compliment the venue perfectly while staying with our romantic style.  I decided to use gold chiavari chairs to incorporate subtle gold accents into our reception.  Being an elementary school teacher, I have an obsession with chalkboards and chalk art.  I decided to use small gold chalkboards as table numbers, along with larger gold chalkboard signs for our wedding gifts, cookie table, etc.  I loved these simple details that incorporated hints of gold.  We incorporated blush by using pink napkins and chair bows.  Our centerpieces were absolutely beautiful with pink roses, hydrangeas, astilbe, snapdragons, and greenery.  Our vision came alive perfectly on our wedding day.

What inspired your vision?
Surprisingly enough, I was inspired by candle holders!  I was so stressed about the vision for our wedding because I truly just couldn't picture how everything was going to come together.  About five months before the big day, I found a set of three tiered pink mercury glass candle holders in a store.  I had a vision of putting flowers in them to create centerpieces.  With the help of my florist, we were able to use the candle holders as inspiration for blush and gold flowers and decor.

What made your wedding unique?
It was filled with so much love all day and night….literally every second!

What was your favorite moment of the day?
My favorite moment of the day was when Justin and I snuck away to take pictures together on the golf course.  Our photographer found a beautiful tree that overlooked the Allegheny River.  It was absolutely breathtaking!  It was such a special moment because it was one of the only times that day that we were alone.  Our photographer was absolutely amazing and made us feel so special while taking our pictures.  We completely forgot they were there!  At one point, I remember looking down on our guests during the cocktail hour and looking at Justin standing next to me…I just felt so overwhelmed with happiness and love that it brought me to tears.  It was such a special moment and I was so happy to share it with Justin.

Bride to Bride

What advice would you give to other Burgh Brides planning their big day?
Be sure to take time for just you and your new husband on your wedding day, even if it is for just a few minutes.  We also tried to stay together the entire night.  It was too special of a night to spend any time apart!

Best of 2016: Pittsburgh Engagement Sessions

I love Pittsburgh engagement sessions almost as much as I love Pittsburgh weddings.  There have been some incredible e-shoots featured on Burgh Brides in the past year.  From vintage themed complete with antique props to brewery-inspired with a few drafts to clean and classic, here are the best engagement shoots from 2016!

Sarah & Brian
This pair opted for something totally outside of the box with their twisted fairy tale themed session with Kelsey Kradel Photography.  I don't know what I love more…Sarah's long, black lace dress, her BA leather jacket, or the super cool trees that look like they jumped right out of a story book.

Lottie & Mark
Like Sarah and Brian, Lottie and Mark also went with a snowy engagement session.  But the best images from their shoot with Meaghan Elliott Photography came when they hit up downtown at sunset.  The glow coupled with the lights of the city and Lottie and Mark are enclosed in a breathtaking aura.

Beth & Matt
These two are the bees knees and their 1950s inspired engagement session with Desiree Deli Photography as a HUGE hit with Burgh Brides readers.  An old roadster, Beth's vintage dress, and a healthy dose of cool…what's not to love about this shoot?

Jessica & Jim
This urban winter engagement session is a little out of the ordinary, but that's partly why it's one of my favorites.  Jessica, Jim, and Breanna Elizabeth Photography braved the cold to take in some of the hip spots in the city.  The result is modern, gritty, but just as lovely.

It's no wonder this Mt. Washington engagement session with furry friends was a crowd pleaser.  I'm a sucker for any dog, but two dogs this cute?  I'm a puddle of mush.  Great work from Steven Dray Images right here.

Need some proof why the early bird gets the worm?  How about this sunrise lakeside engagement session from Kristland Lee Photography?  After checking out the glow in the sky, the calm water, and the overall tranquility of the shoot, you'll be setting your alarm clock a bit earlier.

Their secret garden inspired engagement session is the epitome of romance.  Mellon Park with it's blooming gardens, fountain, and various backdrops made for the perfect location and Kelly Adrienne Photography managed to capture pure love in a few frames.

Ashley & Kevin
A brewery themed engagement session?  UMM, YES PLEASE!  Ashley and Kevin met over beers, got engaged on a brewery tour, and were having a subtle beer themed wedding day.  Some e-photos with Ashley Giffin Photography at The Brew Gentlemen made complete sense.  Bottoms up!

Ali & Nate
You'll find the best of both worlds in Ali and Nate's dichotomous engagement session with Michael Will Photography.  Whether embracing fall in the park or strutting their stuff in black tie attire downtown, these two look good doing just about anything.

Kelly & Evan
This scenic engagement session is pretty new to Burgh Brides, but it was a huge hit.  It's not wonder.  The way Victoria Irene Photography was able to capture the beauty of nature and fall is simply incredible.  Those colors and that landscape!  The earth is so cool.

A Cozy & Bold Winter Styled Shoot

Winter and a wedding don't naturally go together, especially in Pittsburgh.  But this styled shoot should be enough to convince you that getting married in the cold months can be quite beautiful.  An A-list team of vendors, including Burgh Brides friends Jenni Grace Photography, Purple Wagon Designs, and The Blue Daisy Floral Designs, came together to create wedding day inspiration that is both cozy and bold.  The secret ingredient?  Blending bright colors to contrast against the gray, cold Pittsburgh winter, but yet also embracing it.  The design began with a venue that would showcase the gorgeous city skyline – the Carnegie Science Center.  From their spaces both indoor and out, you get a breathtaking view unlike few others in the city.  Next came a vibrant palette of magenta, red, navy, and mixed metallics.  Eye catching florals were in the form of centerpieces of varying shapes and heights and one hell of a bridal bouquet.  Just wait until you see that pop of color against a crisp, white wedding dress!  To top it all off, the couple posed wrapped in a plaid, wool blanket while enjoying a rooftop DIY s'mores bar.  Warm and exciting, this styled shoot is guaranteed to make you reconsider that summer wedding.

From the event designer…

Imagining a winter wedding in Pittsburgh can seem out of reach when you consider the ever-changing and unpredictable winters that we endure, but it doesn't have to be!  Our city is absolutely gorgeous in any season and we have some of the most beautifully unique venues that will allow you to execute a winter wedding to perfection!

Going into this styled shoot, we wanted to make sure that we chose the perfect venue that allowed us to showcase all that we wanted to highlight…a Pittsburgh city backdrop, an urban, sophisticated feel, deep bold colors, and a sense of warmth amidst the cold.  The Carnegie Science Center gave us the perfect opportunity to do all of the above!  The biggest challenge was making sure to create a perfect blend of silvers and golds on the table, mixing it with the red and midnight blue and NOT making it feel patriotic.  The trick was to stay away from any white and really play into and blend each element that was on and around the table.  The bold colors we chose for flowers were stunning and the perfect fit for the look we wanted to create.  And bringing in the s'mores bar and having it strategically set up on the rooftop of the Science Center with the city as the backdrop, along with wrapping our couple in a a cozy winter blanket, created that perfect sense of warmth even though it was cold outside.

Best of 2016: Wedding Dresses

Let's be honest…everyone's favorite part of Burgh Brides is seeing all of the ah.maz.ing wedding dresses.  You can tell so much about a bride's personality from what she chooses to wear on her wedding day.  Loose and boho?  She's someone I'd want to hang out with on the weekends.  Ballroom and rhinestones?  A classic gal through and through.  Blush pink?  Gasp!  I love a bold bride.  Looking back at 2016, there were some stunning gowns featured on the blog but here are my absolute favorites!

Sarah
Off the shoulder, tiered lace, sleeves, a beaded belt…need I say more about this Rivini number?  Just when I thought it couldn't get any more gorgeous, Sarah accessorized with diamond and emerald earrings.  Perfect for her classic winter wedding!

Julie
Every bride deserves to look (and feel) like an absolute princess on her wedding day.  And if Julie doesn't totally epitomize that, then I don't know who will.  Her custom-made Lea-Ann Belter blush ball gown WITH POCKETS was made for twirling and she so played the part at her glamorous hotel wedding.

Ashley
As this bride put it, “It’s ok if your dress comes from a department store and your accessories were on clearance.”  Ashley found her lace, hi-low hem dress at JCPenney and dressed it up with navy suede booties and a statement necklace.  Love was the focus of this intimate elopement but I still think Ashley looked like a million bucks.  Plus, clearance shoppers are my home girls.

Nina
One star of the show at this chic wedding was Nina's dress.  The high neck and cap sleeves of the Allure Couture gown, plus the simple accessories and cathedral veil, made Nina a vision of grace and elegance.  Classic beauty right here.

Tara
What made Tara's wedding dress so special?  Oh, just the fact that it was the same dress worn by her mother and grandmother.  NBD.  Actually, it's a HUGE deal and I'm absolutely in love with it.  A little modernization (plus a sign explaining the heirloom) made the tea length gown a highlighted feature at her fourth of July wedding.

Molly
Molly's bohemian number was perfect for her charming, laid-back wedding day.  The sweetheart neckline, long layers, and lace trim made it bridal while still being comfy.  A floral crown of baby's breath and simple pearl earrings were lovely finishing touches.

I never thought two tea length gowns would make the list but then Alyssa and her woodsy wedding came along.  Her Justin Alexander dress featured Venetian lace, a ruched silk waist, and small beaded details.  If I could give an award for Most Demure Bride, Alyssa would definitely win.

Kara
Lace was the clear winner for brides this year, and Kara was on point with the trend.  Her dress was dainty while still being sophisticated and that back was absolutely stunning.  My favorite part?  The cuff bracelet accenting her right wrist, perfect for her navy and gold wedding.

Annie
You might not expect a pink wedding dress at a pumpkin inspired fall wedding, but that might make this one even better.  Annie chose a blush and merlot color scheme and incorporated subtle seasonal touches into her big day, but her pleated Sottero and Midgley number with an abundance of ruffles was hands-down my favorite detail.
